Kalpana asked

Hi Bhakti - I'm a freelance writer and journalist published with newspapers and magazines. I write my own blog about divorce, travel, feminism, culture. I took a career detour and taught English for 5 years but I really want to get back to writing although I didn't keep in touch with my freelance contacts. How do you suggest I get back into the writing market. I'm also an older woman and people seem to want the work of young people. Please help.
14 Nov 2015, 01:03pm
Hey Kalpana, I love the topics you're writing on...you can definitely build on your niche...as someone in my mid-30s, I can say that more experienced women definitely have a lot to contribute, both in terms of professional experience as well as through life experiences. Even if you haven't kept in touch with previous clients over the years, there's no harm in reaching out now with a nice email explaining you've been busy but would love to catch up now, even if it's just online. Freelancing is great also because age isn't a barrier -- your work speaks for itself...some ways to find clients: https://sheroes.in/articles/5-great-ways-of-getting-freelance-writing-clients/NDA4 Other suggestions: https://sheroes.in/articles/5-great-ways-of-getting-freelance-writing-clients/NDA4 Good luck.

Aditi asked

Hi Bhakti, I am hoping to make a career shift to the field of science, medical and healthcare writing. I am also keen to explore the domain of science journalism. I thoroughly enjoy reading and writing and have about 2 years of content writing experience, but sadly mostly with writing mills. Now I would like to excel in writing about my field, and hope to make this into a big independent venture in the future. But right now, I am completely lost on how start off and establish myself and my credibility. Could I learn through freelance work or would some full time experience with an organisation be advised first? If the later, could you please help with suggestions on places which pay decently well and help me with some flexibility, both of which are essential due to my personal/ family constraints ? Your advise would be highly appreciated. Thanks! Regards, Aditi

Hello, Bhakti. I worked for almost 15yrs before taking a break, when I had my daughter. Now that she is 5yrs old and I easily get some 5 to 8hrs free, daily, I have been looking for writing jobs. I have also been blogging off and on since 2002, so had a passion for writing. But almost all jobs available seem to be technical writing/jobs that would require a lot of research, which is not as fulfilling as content writing where I get data, to be turned into prose, or human interest. Also, the remuneration varies a lot, in every job. I can't tell you how much I love writing, without taking, 500 words, if not more. And really need to keep working as well, to feel like I am alive and to earn. Also, working from home/flexihours is all that I can do, as of now. What would be your advice? Looking forward to your guidance. Best regards Rupali Bajpai Sakhiscribbles.blogspot.in

Hey Rupali, sorry for the late reply! It's great that you have the time now and want to work...freelance writing is a good option but you need to be persistent and discerning...some writing gigs will not match the pay of a full-time office job, but there are definitely some decent opportunities for freelance writers out there...polish your skills and be ready for different kinds of assignments...check for Indian and international opportunities both...and if you've written for someone before, request for a testimonial that you can put up for a profile. Fill up your professional profile and do be discerning about what kind of work to take up. Good luck!

Hey Aditi...what kind of writing are you interested in? There are a number of literary journals in India and abroad that accept fiction and non-fiction writing...or, if you want to write for publications/newspapers/magazines, do read up the one you'd like to write for...make a list of very specific topics and mail the editor (you can find the editorial information on their website or in the print magazine). To clarify to yourself what kind of writing you enjoy, maybe you could start a blog and just start writing...or maybe contribute professionally to your university/college blog/newsletter if there's one. Hope this helps.

Hey Mayuri, glad you liked the interview :) You could start off by identifying and approaching publications that carry stories related to your areas of interest (parenting and kids). Write to the editor with story ideas, how you want to present your article, who you'll interview etc. Or better yet, call up and speak to the publication editor/editorial assistant. Hi Bhakti, How are you? Currently being a stay home mom has earned me all the brownie points I need. However, now I need to start working as I used to do before. I used to work for Oracle India Pvt Ltd, five years back. I have always wanted to get back to work. Recently, I have been on a screening process to see what works best for me. Well, guessed I need a mentor to show the direction to how? when? where? and what?. I went through a course called "Content Writer". I wanted to know what are the qualification to become one and from where I need to start? Any ideas, please let me know..Thanks, Pushpa
28 Jan 2015, 05:17pm
Dear Pushpa, it's great that you're taking some time and effort to figure out what works best for you...suggest some online courses like the ones offered by the British Council: http://www.britishcouncil.in/english/courses-adults Educational qualification-wise, for content jobs, people from literature/mass-comm/journalism background are preferred, but if you have the requisite writing skills, that's not a must. If you're interested, there are a number of distance learning universities that offer these courses. But the best test to judge if you can make it as a writer would be to actually apply for a content job/project, show up for the initial screening/written test and then see where you stand. Most firms would have a screening/written test (even if it's online) to check if you meet their requirements, so go for it. All the best.

Hi Bhakti, I have a penchant for writing. Though I don't have any prior work experience, I can excel in the field of writing and prove that I'm no less compared to the much experienced ones. My daughter is 17months old and I have to be there at home to take care of her. Though it's a bit stressful taking care of her dawn to dusk while my husband is out for work, I try to gather strength and actively take care of my child. I'm enjoying motherhood. Despite all this, somewhere I feel incomplete. I want to work. It makes me feel a bit frustrated sometimes that being well-educated and having skills,I'm confined to the four walls. Also, check out local businesses and offer them your writing services for things like marketing flyers/in-house magazines (your profile mentions some advertising/media experience) etc. Also, since you have a strong elocution/debating experience, maybe something related to that? Prior to the break i was associated with training and talent transformation team with BPO's. I am back on track and now looking for work from home based jobs. Currently got entry as a guest blogger on one of the sites and also doing some paid articles. I have two questions 1. I am an MBA in HR, however i want to pursue journalism , do you suggest it is a good idea or a requirement for writing. 2. I am paid extremely low for my articles, with the excuse that i am a new writer, i wanted to know if there was a route to chase US and other clients on my own and write for them instead of going through a middle party who end up taking away the benefit . Also, want to mention that read one of your post where you have made suggestions on what books to pick as a new writer and you have written amazingly well. Cheers
28 Jul 2014, 04:37am
Hi Shweta! Thanks for writing in and for the warm feedback :) A course in journalism is not a must for freelance journalism, though it'll help with things like understanding the ethics of the business and in writing techniques. To get better-paying clients, flesh out your linkedin, sheroes profiles. Once that's done, read your own profile from the perspective of a client...would you hire you? if not, take some time and polish it as much as you can... Spread the word among your network, the personal one as well as the professional...word-of-mouth can be a great way of getting work...for more sources, take a look at this: http://sheroes.in/articles/5-great-ways-of-getting-freelance-writing-clients/NDA4 Also, once you get a client, see if you can get repeat business or a contract for more work...for that, the first work assignment you do needs to be stellar enough for them to consider you again...there are a number of ITES organisations in India that look for consistent and talented freelancers...email me if you need any further info... good luck!

Hey Aparna, it's never too late to start writing...if it helps you stay motivated, write down a few goals and set aside some time daily for yourself and your writing...it can be a challenge with two kids, yes, but it's required and doable...for getting back to freelance journalism, can you contact your previous org and check if they'd like a piece or two? Keep doing other things too -- call up the desk of a few publications and ask for the email id/phone no. of the features editor or sectional editor you'd like to write for...hunt on jobsites and freelance sites for writing assignments...fill out your linkedin and sheroes profile with details about what you'd like to do and have done in the past (to make it easier for freelance clients to contact you). Let me know if this works, or if there's anything else.

Hi Bhakti I have done B.A(English Hons.) M.A (English) Diploma in journalism and mass communication M.B.A (Hr & Mkt) (correspondence) Regular B.Ed from top notch institute of North India . I have worked as spoken english IELTS GRE GMAT SAT faculty and as lecturer in two prestigious colleges . Now I am at cross roads. Can you please guide me which line to choose?
17 Jul 2014, 05:48am
Dear Sumita, that's an impressive list of educational quals! Are you looking for a full-time job or a work-from-home thing? Where are you based? The kind of opportunities you pursue for a fulltime job depend a lot on where you are based. For a freelance career, your place of residence wouldn't really matter. With your qualifications, you could look into online tutoring jobs...your mba degree, B.ed plus gmat faculty experience make you a great candidate for online tutoring if work-from-home is what you're looking for. Freelance journalism is also a great option, since you have a degree in English and a diploma in journalism... If full-time jobs is what you're looking for, there's so much you can do, your city allowing for it all of course: corporate communications, instructional design, publishing, teaching faculty etc. As a start, maybe going on a job portal and looking for options may help clarify what you want to do...alternatively, you could make a list of things you enjoy doing more, that bring you joy (writing vs. teaching, for example). Hope this helps.

Hi Bhakti, Thank you for your quick reply. Here are a few queries I am facing: 1. What tariff/rate would be reasonable for someone starting in freelancing and later on when one attends some credibility in the field? 2. What timeline would you suggest for an article of 500 words?(time frame that would be required to submit the article would be reasonable commitment). Please advise. Nikhat

Hi Nikhat, Was very happy to see your email...so nice to see you followed up and even bagged that freelance assignment... Freelance writing rates in India can vary wildly, depending on the client, kind of work, experience etc. A lot of work out there unfortunately pays less than peanuts...be careful to weed out such clients...as a beginner, you may decide to settle for a lower rate, although depending on your qualifications, work experience or plain good luck, you could get more...as an example of the huge difference in rates: basic internet writing gigs can pay anything from less than a rupee per word to 3-4 rs per word...copywriting for corporates pays more...freelance journalism pays more depending on which geography you're writing for...if you accept low-paying gigs just for a little bit of experience, make sure to keep it for a short duration and to keep hunting for better assignments...there can be a lot of opportunities out there to help you make a decent income...but you need to consciously search for this kind of better work...it can be easy to get caught in a rut of low-paying assignments, but this can burn you out really fast and leave you without any real savings...so keep improving your skills, market your work and keep looking for better projects... one great way to getting better-paying gigs is to market your work more, network more, be it online or offline...For starters, flesh out your linkedin profile...create a website that showcases your work and services...contact the places you've worked in before to see if they'd have any freelancer needs... Now the other part of your query: a 500 word piece can take different amounts of time depending on whether it's a basic product description, a simple internet article or a print piece or a corporate blog post...once you get the hang of it, 2-3 hours for a medium complexity post can be enough...initially though, it could take you longer...if the article is a rather simple one with little research needed, an hour may be sufficient...

Hi Bhakti, your blog is well informed and informative. I am currently looking to genuine freelance work and better work life balance. I need to know how to proceed in this direction as most local newspapers etc display not so genuine freelance activities. How can I approach genuine interested parties and what should I expect if I decide to go to freelancing from a corporate job? Any specific information I need to know? I am based in Pune.
17 Jun 2014, 02:51pm
Hey Nikhat, thanks for writing in. For getting freelance work, you could start off by putting up your profile on sites like freelanceindia.com. To begin with, an anonymous (no name) profile can also do, with a contact email id mentioned and details about your experience and edu quals. I've also landed freelance gigs from Naukri.com...one good assignment from craigslist mumbai too, from the freelance writing section...but I'd advise being v careful with sites like craigslist, since vendors usually put up very little info about themselves. Freelancing in the beginning may not bring in as much income as a corporate job, so do keep that in mind before you take the plunge. Also, do explore work-from-home opportunities in your current job...these days, for the right candidate, a few corporates do show some flexibility in working options.

Hi, How does a amateur writer build career in content writing? The bigger companies want good experience and the start-ups don't pay well. Also I have heard from people that it is very important to select a niche and build career in that direction. But is it realistic?

Hello Bhakti, Hope you are doing good. I am a chocolatier with my special and limited edition of home made chocolates. I have been promoting my chocolates through friends, family and so on word of mouth.. It was at a very small scale that I was doing it till now. But with the kind of response and reviews that I have come across for my chocolates, I believe it would not be right if I do not take it further on a larger scale. I would like to know if you could help me with some idea to promote my product. Currently I would not be in a position to invest a high monetary figure for promotion. I am really keen on taking it ahead and making it a full time career. Please advise. Thanks & Regards Anila
