The hard truth is that working women have dual responsibilities of office and home. The balancing act between 2 sides is tough but not undoable. It is also true that if you compromise too much, you wont be able to build a full fledged and growing career. Doing a job to busy yourself will not equal to a long term and robust career. Long term career can only be built with consistency in work experience, industry and job function. The decision to change career tracks after about 10 years of work experience should be well thought and introspected. I have written 2 blogs on career transition. You can read them here. https://bhavpritah.wordpress.com/2016/12/08/how-to-make-successful-career-transition-part-i/
I will suggest you to spend more time in thinking about your next steps in career before taking any action.

Beside startups, you can also look at educations ector where you have experience as well. Education sector is booming in India and I am sure you would find your past experience in setting up schools value match with job requirements. Meanwhile you can also explore opportunities in startups but my guess is most would require corporate experience unless startups are in education sector where your past work experience can be relevant.

You are correct, as a single mother you must be financially secure. Please try professional recruiters in your job search. Search online for them(I don't have any contacts to pass on). It is harder with more than 10-12 years of experience to get jobs but keep trying and you will get one. Meanwhile if it is taking too long, be open to freelancing work on upwork.com or similar marketplaces. All the best! View Less19 Dec 2016, 01:09pm

There are practices in consulting companies which focus on media Industry but be aware that work in any IT consulting firm would revolve around technology and it would not necessarily involve journalistic skills such as writing or interviewing. If you want to continue doing what you are doing, then You can also target advertising and media consultancies. hey, i am turning 26 in a few days, I have completed my graduation and after doing MBA in HR (Correspondence) i started to prepare for government competitions but that didn't worked out so I want to get a job in private sector now in HR dept. but my mom is still not convinced. She says "if you can get a govt job well and good, and if not then no worries. get married. job isn't a priority as there is no financial crunch. and moreover private jobs are not safe" I had tried to explain her that i want to be independent but she is not at all convinced. Please guide me, what else can i do? 08 Dec 2016, 04:41pm
It is your career and your life. I can understand a mothers mindset in our society to get her daughter married but every woman should target to be financially independent. Today there is no financial crunch but what about in future. Try for govt job but if you don't get it, should be open to private job as well. With time your mother would understand. You must be convinced first that you want to pursue your career whether its govt or private, it doesn't matter. Once you are convinced, slowly your mother or other relatives in future would also be convinced. What matters is your determination and focus. View Less19 Dec 2016, 12:57pm

Hi Bthavprita, Deepa this side. I have moved to Bangalore in the month of June 2016 . Before this I was staying in Delhi NCR for the last 16 years. I was working in Gurgaon till February 2016 then my family has moved to Bangalore and so do I. I have been searching jobs but its hard luck. I could find any job yet. Just to brief about me, I am an experienced professional with 10+ years of experience in fields such as Payroll Administration, Comp and Ben and Defined benefits (US). I have worked with prestigious organizations in the past, starting my career with Aon Hewitt handling the defined benefits for US participants for 5.5 years. After which moved to the consulting business with Aon and worked for 1.5 years as a C&B Senior Analyst. In my latest role as a Team Leader handling the service delivery for EMEA payrolls supported by a team of 15 Payroll Specialists. I am adept at client management, team management, performance appraisals, goal setting exercise for TM's. Can you suggest what should I do? Its been almost a year now that Iam on a break now. Please help me. 28 Nov 2016, 04:00pm
Thanks for writing in. You have pretty strong profile and should not be long before you get your desired job.
I understand you have been trying but struggling to find a job. First of all this happens and it is not your fault or that there is any problem with your profile. There are forces beyond our control such as macro economic environment, current job market, place and Industry compatibility for your job search etc which can affect results of any job search. Most importantly DO NOT LET result of your job search for past year affect your self confidence and self belief. THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT.
Now some key things you can do to enhance the success of your job search:
1. Take help of recruiter if you have not taken yet. Try for recruiter for experienced professionals.
2. Expand your job search net by considering jobs outside your field/industry but related in some way where your past experience can be considered.
3. Consider working for non profit org even if you don't get paid(unless your livelihood will depend on your salary), it will atleast add work experience.
4. Consider working for startups for small salary and some stake for same reasons as above. Start ups are thriving in bangalore.
While you are searching for job, You should aim to utilise your time and keep working or doing things which you can show on your resume for time period. few suggestions
1. you can try to get freelancing projects in your field. www.upwork.com
2. Get professional certifications relevant for your field. Search in coursera, udemy.
3. Set up your blog for free in wordpress and write articles related to your field/Industry
4. Take up community work or NGO work.
Don't lose hope and keep trying each day. Keep doing something each day which would add value to your skill sets, profile and resume.
You are going to get it sooner or later. It is only matter of time. Let me know when it happens.
Hope it helps.

You are contemplating to change career track and hope you have thought through it. Consulting like any other career track has its own pros and cons. Do factor in the basic requirement of constant travel for projects execution and how that affects your work life balance. If you decide yo go ahead with career change, here are are my few suggestions. I have written 2 articles on career change and these would be published in last 2 weeks of december on my my personal blog . You can check here https://bhavpritah.wordpress.com/
If you decide to change your career track, here are few suggestions:
1. Target Tier 1 IT companies. Most of them have business consulting stream where consultants from Industry experience join. Search for role of process consultants, business consultants in Banking domain.
2. There might be skill set , knowledge & experience gap with respect to project management, project delivery, project planning, Business analysis, requirements analysis and so on. Plan to bridge this gap through professional certifications. Check coursera, udemy etc.
3. If possible, you can plan to go for 1 year MBA from good brand institute which would help you in making the career transition.
4. Try to get a first hand experience by doing a project, if possible . Talk to people in job profile you want to get in. They would give you a real sense of how it would be.
Also be mindful that 16 years experience is on higher side for a career track change as usually people do within 10 years of experience. Having said that, if you have thought through your decision and really want to make this change, you should go for it.
Hope it helps

Hi I am looking job,in HR but not got any call from your side. I am MCA and having 6 years exp. In IT 29 Oct 2016, 02:09pm
You have MCA qualification and 6 years experience in IT, and you are exploring for jobs in HR which is a completely different function. You are attempting to change your career track and this would require planned and systematic effort other than just searching for jobs. Before you search for jobs, your profile should have the competency to fulfill the job requirements. I would suggest you to do the following :
1. Add education qualification in HR - full time or part time course
2. Add certifications in HR in case you can not do full time or part time course
3. Try to gain some experience in HR as freelance or for NGO even if unpaid. Added experience in same filed will increase your chances for landing a job
4. Tailor your resume to highlight any HR related initiatives or work you would have done in your past experience.
5. Build an important answer to why you want to change the track from IT to HR. Include this in summary of your resume.
Do few or all of these and you would significantly increase your probability of landing a job in your preferred field.

I do not have leads to give you for job opportunities but I can guide you on how to go about it.
1. Reach out to you contacts in your past employers and check if any part time role can be worked out for you.
2. Reach out to your network in the industry to apply for any job openings. Much of lateral hire in reputed companies happens through referrals.
3. Apply through job portal such as sheroes and others for any relevant openings.
4. You can also try recruiter services if you are not successful in finding a job on your own.
5. Keep building your profile through professional certifications relevant for your profile.
6. In case you are not getting any projects for part time work, think over the full time job option. Many a times once you have job offer , you can have some flexible terms agreed upon.
7. In case of not finding a paid job of your choice, you can look at jobs and projects in your field in NOT for profit sector. Any experience is better than none.

Is it so that I can take a stand against this?? Kindly suggest and clarify my 2 queries... 22 Oct 2016, 03:40pm
Thanks for writing in. Here are my suggestions-
1. Do not consider that just one year of irregular work experience will make your profile weak. One of the most important things is having a very high self esteem and confidence. If you would see negatives in your profile others will only agree with you. Same is opposite of it. Do not let the idea that your profile is unstable get to your head. Everybody goes through some or other issues over the years in their career. What matters is to not let it bog you down and get head irrespective of the challenging time. Only upon trying would you know if it was possible and there is no harm in trying in reputed organizations.
2. Work on your resume and building your profile stronger. See what gaps are there and what you can do which will build your profile stronger. Professional certifications are a good way to add value to your profile as well as skillsets and knowledge. Research on some relevant online certifications applicable in your field.
3. Query 2 you can handle it in 2 ways.
A. Have a clear discussion with your manager about the agreed roles and responsibilities. As them to either amend your accepted job responsibilities and add the added work for another venture which you are already doing. You can also ask for a change in designation or a higher designation since you are handling more work. You Can also ask for a increase in salary in lieu of your added work responsibility. You must negotiate skillfully and assertively but at same time protecting your job. View Less24 Oct 2016, 10:44am

2. Work on your resume and build your profile. You can take help of professional resume writing services. Bring out your best in resume.
