Hi Deepa, I have worked in the social sector for around a decade having a diversity of experiences in HRM, Academics and Research & Documentation. I have almost 5 years experience of working as a HR Executive at a NGO but I have never been trained on the job in HR. I want to gain an idea of Salary & Compensation as that is where I get beaten in interviews and lose opportunities. Kindly guide.

I would suggest you take up a short course in HR or specifically in Compensation & Benefits to gain understanding of this subject. Many training organisations keep conduction open workshops in this area. Google research should get you all workshop details. enjoy learning

Hi Deepa, I have done MBA from distance learning, I have 12 years of total experience in industry. out of this 12 years, 6 years is in HR and rest is in client handling and administration. currently, I am on sabbatical from 2012 onwards because of family priorities. Recently, I started applying for HR position and got the feedback that my HR profilye is general profile. is there anyway I can get an internship for HR and brush up my skills before applying again after the break. Do you have any other suggestion?
20 Mar 2017, 09:14am
Am sure many organisations would be willing to take you as intern. For organisations interns are free resources and Indians love freebees. One of them may then want to hire you basis your performance. You can ask for internship to the same people who have given you the feedback. Another way to get back in could be to start studying again. Acquire new skills at a reputed institute and then get opportunities through campus hire. Third way would be keep applying till you get hired and then learn on the job...wish you the very best.

Hi Deepa, Greetings! Hope you are doing well? \nI am a marketing and communications professional with an experience of 15+yrs. Have worked with Media, Banking, BPO. My last job was with one of the top BPO's in communications. However, due to certain personal reasons - had to quit . It's been 6 months that I have been applying to jobs but with no interview calls. My CV is good and I have the required skills and talent. But, CV not getting shortlisted - means that there are still gaps which I am not able to figure out. Can I please request you to review my CV and your inputs will help me gain confidence if I am on the right track. And if required, i'll make the recommended changes. May I please request to have your email address enabling me to mail you the resume? Thanks Leena

(Replied by SHEROES Coach via SHEROES Career Helpline) Hi Leena ,\n\nThank you for reaching out ! My name is Adi and I will be helping you with this query.\n\nOur sincerest apologies on the delay in response. \n\nOn Sheroes specifically the profile page acts as your resume and cover letter. As a result of this - there is no space to update the resume into. \n\nFrom a look at your profile - it does seem very well written. The only thing I would recommend adding is details of what you studied during your MBA and also the details of your bachelors degree. \n\nHave you been applying to roles that you might be over qualified for ?

Hi Deepa. How useful was your stint in the Air force in your later work life ? Did it help or was it a hindrance while getting in the corporate sector ?
08 Mar 2017, 04:27pm
Hi! Monica. Happy Women's Day. Well my stint in the Air Force was wonderful and a great learning experience. If i allow myself to be a bit boastful, it made me a leader from being just a manager. Majority of the senior managers in the corporate world are never able to make that shift. Though it was tough convincing the corporate world initially of the skill sets i brought to the table, after seeing me in action they were convinced and that's why i have done fairly well in the corporate world and grown fast. regards

I have been doing recruitment since the last 4 years, however my interest lies in Branding and Advertising. I have done PGDM in Marketing and also done sales & marketing for a year when I started my career. I would request you to suggest how do I proceed in my career.
08 Mar 2017, 04:26pm
Hi! Tulika. Happy Women's Day. Its important to follow your heart and equally important to keep upgrading your skills since we live in a very dynamic world. If its been some time since you did a marketing role, it would be a good idea to assess your skills, find out the gap areas, work on those and then get into the job market. In past few years digital marketing has grown leaps and bounds. Every marketing professional today needs to be skilled at it. There are many organisation which are offering courses in digital marketing. These organisations also help people find good opportunities after the course is over. So you may want to research who are the best players in this space, learn from them and make the shift. Your ex marketing professors, bosses & colleagues who continued in marketing space could also be a good source of information. Once you have the requisite skills it will not be difficult to find the right opportunity. All the best. :)

Hi Deepa, what differences do you see between the corporate world and the Air Force work environment?
08 Mar 2017, 04:21pm
Hi! Pallavy. Happy women's Day. To be honest, I don't see much difference between the corporate world and the Indian Air Force (IAF) environment as far as people, their needs, aspirations are concerned. However as an HR professional the tools available to me and the challenges are in corporate world are different from the tools IAF gave me. In Air Force, people join you with long term perspective. They know exiting would not be easy but they still make that choice because of multiple reasons - job security, benefits, a big brand name and most important because they feel connected to the purpose/vision of the IAF which is to protect the Indian Skies. Annual hikes are fixed so money cannot be used as a motivator and inspite of that retention is not a challenge. People very strongly identify with the organisation, feel proud of it and have deep emotional connect. In corporate world associations are shorter, emotional connect is low, retention is a challenge hence hiring consumes most of your time, money is a big motivator to get talent in and retain it. Most corporate organisations are struggling to allign individual goals with organisational goals, to form deeper bonds with employees, to show them the larger picture, to help them grow within the organisation etc... Hope this answers your question. Regards

06 Mar 2017, 06:10pm
Happy Women's Day Poonam! Good to know that you are wanting to get started again. Since you want to work out of home, you may want to checkout various job sites like sheroes for work from home option. You may want to reach out to HR professionals, your ex boss, colleagues on social media. Basically try and reachout to as many people as you can, network through various HR networking groups or face to face. You may also want to start something on your own depending on which area in HR you would want to work in. Many HR consultants look for people to do short term projects. Research, pick up new skills which support work from home model. Wish you the very best. In case you need coaching to figure out a way out for yourself, please let me know. as a trained coach i would be happy to coach you. regards

Happy Women's Day Subhashita! Today is a great day to get started again. As a recruiter its quite possible to work from home. Since you have done this before, you may want to reach out to the organisations you have worked for before your break and to many more who are working in the area of recruitment. Fortunately the number of such organisations is quite large. and many of them, to save infrastructure cost, prefer to hire people who want to work from home. And of course Sheroes is a great platform to look for such opportunities. Social media is another such platform. Wish you the very best. As a coach i would be happy to enable you to find a solution to your challenge through a formal coaching session in case you want it. Thanks

Dear Deepa, I am an advertising professional that started out in design, progressed to copy writing and ended up in planning & servicing! About 15 years of industry experience. Thereafter , I moved into education for the past 7 years as Regional Head looking after Enrollments, Placements, Continuing education and Consultancy. i want to move to Corporate Communication. Can you help?
27 Feb 2017, 01:11pm
Hi! Usha. Most good organisations would be advertising for the openings on their own website or job websites or social media. It would be a good idea to do some research and zero on the organisations you would want to work for, check out their career section, put in your resume there, try and connect with the decision makers there through social media. And also look at job websites at regular intervals and apply for relevant openings. Search consultants can also help you to find the right role. Simultaneously it will help to research on what do organisation want in their corp comm resource, match it with your skill set, identify the skill gap and work on it. Regards

Hi! Vaishali, you will need to check portals like Sheroes on regular basis to find the appropriate role. You may also want to write directly to the organisations who need people with your skill sets, saying that you are looking for work from home opportunities. Most organisations keep CVs in their data bank and contact the candidates when they have some requirement. Thanks
