Hi Gurleen, I am a 30 year old single female. I have done my masters in pharmacy and have 5.5 years of corporate pharma industry experience. i had a rural posting 6 months back with an ngo based in healthcare as part of a csr activity where i realized i have a flair of teaching because of my background is story telling, music and drama and am mainly good with enhancing people's interaction and communication skills. i got interested in MA in education course by azim premji university whose course work matches my personality. what i am skeptical now is that i am unable to decide whether i should quit my job to pursue this course or should i do BEd or DEd through distance education while working?

Hi Lekshmy, thanks for writing to me. Your question brought a smile to my face (: I admire your commitment to ongoing professional development which is the only way to grow and succeed. Bachelor of Education would be your starting point if you are interested in teaching as a career. This would give you insight into pedagogic knowledge required for your professional practice as a teacher. Whether you should leave your present job or continue working while simultaneously completing your Bachelor of Education program, is a question you need to ask yourself. While some people are good at balancing professional workload and personal time, others may find it overwhelming at times! I have completed three qualifications during my first three years of experience with my company. So yes, it's possible to do both. All you need is perseverance and grit! All the best! Feel free to reach out in the case of any other query or keep me updated with the progress!

Hi Thripti, Thanks for writing to me. For becoming a trainer, one needs to be a subject-matter expert. Dear Pradnya, thanks for writing in. You can consider online tutoring for secondary school students. Since you are a science graduate, I can confidently assume that you will be able to teach Science subjects to high school students. For entering the job market as an online tutor, you can start by working with an online tutoring website which will already have a number of registered users. They can capitalize on your potential and in return, you will acquire valuable professional experience to understand the dynamics of the business. Eventually, your as your credibility and professional reputation continue to grow, you can start your own online tutoring service. All the best!

Hi Gurleen, I am a Post Graduate in Marketing with 12 years of experience into Finance and Human Resource Industry into sales, business development, key account management and managing operations. Now on a sabbatical since last 3 years to look after my daughter. Now I want to change profile to training. So Want your guidance on this. The scope of training Industry,is it write to shift now, kind of work pressure.Main reason to shift is I want now Job with less pressures and hectic schedule compared to my previous jobs.
14 Feb 2017, 02:24pm
Hi Himani, I regret the delayed response. I appreciate your decision of taking a break to be with your daughter during her formative years. UNICEF states that the early childhood years from birth through age 8 are formative in terms of intelligence, personality, and social behavior. The first two years are particularly crucial. Anyways, training would be a good option for you since you can complete some aspects of your work from home while being with your daughter. For instance, pre-training involves need analysis and designing modules to achieve learning objectives as well as planning instructor-led activities to complement the learning, which can be done from home as well.Corporate training can be for technical skills, people skills or soft skills and I would encourage you to identify your area of interest and expertise as a trainer needs to be a subject matter expert. You can train employees in Finance and Human Resources given your employment history. Further, you can undergo a formal training course from Dael Carnegie or Bodhih Solutions for getting an insight into training fundamentals. Keep working hard consistently and I am confident that you will succeed. Feel free to reach out in case you wish to discuss more regarding this topic.

Hi Saneeya, the minimum entry criterion for enrolling in the above-captioned course is 50 % in a degree of any stream. However, different colleges prefer students who have studied psychology at the undergraduate level or an honours degree in psychology. Other institutions also have qualifying entrance examinations and students are admitted based on merit. You can check the university or college website for more details. If you want to practise as a clinical psychologist, ensure that the program of your choice is recognised by RCI- rehabilitation council of india. Hope this helps !

22 Dec 2016, 03:22pm
Hi Attayre, I am glad that you want to pursue your interest in baking as a career. It can definitely get you a decent income and sky's the limit when it comes to growth as an entrepreneur. Having said that, consider the following factors: 1. Are you financially stable at the moment? If yes, you can use your savings to get you through first few months when you are not earning enough. Also, it will be important to handle the emotions of not being immediately successful. 2. If you do not have the time to take up a professional course in culinary sciences or patisserie, refer to some good baking books or take up apprenticeships with people who are doing well already so that you can learn the science and some valuable inputs. 3. It is always helpful if you start with something that is unique to you for instance a special recipe that can become your USP. 4. Use social media platforms with testimonials from happy clients which goes a long way in gaining a reputation. I am confident of your success given your passion and I wish you all the best ! I look forward to trying something delicious from your bakery soon :P

Hi Gurleen thanks for being there and helping us. I have a BA, PG in Travel and Tourism, PG in PR, and Micro computer business application. Recently I got an associate degree in Paralegal studies in USA. I have over ten years of admin experience mainly in service industry and non profit. I am exploring on line options for teaching, being a trainer for corporate. Can you please suggest any good institute in Hyderabad where i can get training. As I have recently returned to India I dont want to be trapped in a wrong place. Also you mentioned, schooli and GCC in one of your answers to sheroes. Can you please share the full form of GCC, schooli does not seem to be a working domain, unless i got a wrong name, Thanks
19 Dec 2016, 01:21pm
Hi Sangeeta, Thanks for reaching out ! You have an incredibly impressive line-up of credentials and I am happy to be assisting you. In context of your queries, Kindly see my responses below : For becoming a corporate trainer, certifications hold a lot of value during the initial days. I advise you to attend a TTT (Train the Trainer) program from Dale Carnegie or Pranvis. While you have experience in the service industry, you should identify your strengths and refine your skills to develop an area of expertise for becoming a trainer in the same domain. A TTT course will equip you with the requisite skills to create an interactive session, dealing with resistance and enhancing the quality of learning during a training session. GCC refers to Global Career Counselling Certification offered by Univariety in collaboration with UCLA. I have recently completed this course and found it extremely beneficial. India lacks trainer career counselors and at present, it is estimated that there is only 1 certified career counsellor for every 300 schools in the region. These numbers are alarming and there is growing need of career counsellors for students attending school and college. If you want to become a trained career counsellor, I recommend this course. In terms of employ-ability prospects , the potential is huge as well. You can call me on 9872319935 to discuss more on this as I am working as a counselor.

Hi shantala, you look for several opportunities online where you can work as a trainer or a coach from home. Many companies are looking for telephone or online trainers to teach English. Search for listings on SHEROES and LinkedIn, you will find plenty. And you can schedule the timings of training according to your convenience. Also, if you are genuinely interested to pursue language teaching as a career, seek some professional development programs for instance CELTA, TEFL/TESOL etc. You can also choose to provide online training in your own field to engineering students in India. With a baby, online tutoring is the best choice as it will allow flexibility in your working hours and allow you to control your schedule according to your convenience. All the best !

Hi Surat, I suggest you check out the following website http://www.cie.org.uk/programmes-and-qualifications/cambridge-secondary-2/cambridge-igcse/classroom-support/ and enroll yourself in an online teaching training course that will enable you to build the right skills and knowledge before you commence teaching IGCSE students. Hi Prasoona, It is a very subjective answer and depends a lot on which department you apply. In India, institutions can be classified into Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 categories. Since you are pursuing your PhD, I recommend trying for Tier 3 institutions first. Do you have any publications (conferences, journals or international)? Also, demonstrate research experience relevant to the department where you are applying. Be patient and keep trying !

03 Nov 2016, 08:21pm
Hi Deepa, Corporate training is a skill development program that helps employees of an organization to enhance their business-specific capabilities that they need to apply in their day-to-day work. For example, corporate training can be required for various performance areas such as ‘technical skill’, ‘people skill’, ‘soft skill’ etc. Corporate training first helps assess employees’ existing knowledge and skills, subsequently enhances them with well-designed modules and instructor-led activities in a training environment. I suggest that you identify your expertise based on your past experience and start looking for right contacts in that domain. Keep working on your interpersonal skills and I am sure the right opportunity is just around the corner. Good luck !

Search for jobs of your interest as a software developer or analyst online on websites such as LinkedIN and SHEROES. Also, do not forget to consistently improve your skills by doing some courses online or talking to industry peers. Hi Gurleen , would like advice from you regarding life coach versus image consulting ? How different is it from each other?
31 Oct 2016, 08:00pm
Hi Samina, Life coaching is a type of coaching, or counseling, that can be used to help people who are in major transition phases in their lives. Professionals in this field often try to help people plan goals and takes steps to realize those goals. Simply put, a life coach offers advice and guidance to deal with change that will put them on a path to success. An Image Consultant advises people on physical appearance, body language and communication. A consultant can choose to become a specialist in a certain domain for instance, wardrobe consultant, soft skill trainer or business etiquette trainer etc. Both these professions complement each other and at times client may need to work with both to accomplish the desired objective. Having said this, it is also pertinent to mention that to practice as an image consultant or a life coach, one needs to be articulate, people-oriented and well-trained from a good institute.

Hi Shikha, recruitment is a growing area of interest for young graduates. Do you have any previous/ground level experience in recruiting ? It would be necessary to have prior experience or else you can start off as a temporary consultant to see if you "fit the bill". The key thing, beyond any qualification, is attitude. With recruitment, there's a large element of sales and customer service, so you need to be somebody who can converse well and hold themselves in a presentation. You certainly need to be people-orientated, because clients are the mainstay of the business. As well as being a strong individual, you need to be able to work within a team environment as there are deadlines and targets to be met. It's not just a case of having conversations with people. Hope this helps ! Feel free to reach out to me for more discussion.

20 Oct 2016, 02:03pm
Hi Amrita, First and foremost. you need to decide on which area of business you will be most interested to work in. For instance, you can start working as a trainer for standardized tests like IELTS, PTE-A or TOEFL. Although no compulsory certifications are required for this, you can choose to complete a diploma in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or take up CELTA certification by British Council or Planet EDU. These certifications are extremely useful in improving your teaching methodology. You can also attend TTT ( Train the Trainer ) workshops conducted by IDP, British Council or Pearson. You can also become a soft-skill trainer and for this, you will need lots of experience and the right contacts. I advise you to complete a program in soft-skill training for this. Check out ICBI's website for details about their skill training program. Apart from this, you can work as a counselor in a school, university or an educational agency and for this check out the Global Career Counselor program by Univariety and UCLA. The course fee is about 17,000 INR approximately and it presents an exciting opportunity to enter the education sector.

I am a mother of a 21 year old son. Till last year I was working as a visiting Faculty for various colleges in the travel & tourism department, in Mumbai University and SNDT University. As the work was dependent on hours given by the college the income wasn't fixed. i needed a fixed income as my son , who is in his last year of engineering ,wants to study further. Till a couple of months i brought up my son single handedly, as my husband couldn't afford to give us even the bare necessities. One of my friends living in Chile offered me a job there. Taking all the above into consideration I agreed to leave everything and go to Chile and earn so I could support my son. Then my husband came back into our lives and has taken up all the responsibilities since the last two months. Seeing my husband back, my friend withdrew her help and refused to take me with her. Now I'm jobless. I cant get my old job back because my friends have taken over my lectures and I cant expect them to give them back to me. I am an MA in Sociology, IV done my DIploma IN Travel and Tourism, Diploma in Hotel Management. Please help me look for work. Where I need to go to only one place and from where i can get a fixed amount on a monthly basis .

Sangeeta asked

HI Gurleen I have done BA and obtained few more degrees eg. Travel and Tourism, Computer Application, PR, and most recent in Paralegal studies from USA. Due to my moving to USA in 2008 I had to wait to get my student visa and then work visa. I have a gap of transition due to those moves. I completed my Associate degree majoring in Intellectual property and criminology. I worked after completing my internship and recently moved back to India. How do I represent this transition on my resume and also what are my chances of working in a legal field here or finding something where I can use my skills and education. Thanks
