Hi Manisha,\\n\\nI am Shilpa Bakka, having more than 12 Years of experience in IT industry. Currently I am working with Cerner Healthcare Services as a Manager. I am looking for job since last 6 months though continuity is not there. However, I am unable to crack any interviews. I have hardly attended 4 interviews and received very few calls. I need your guidance and support to understand and address reason why I am unable to get into new job. I am considered one of the best employees in my current organization. The reason why I ma looking for new job is the location of my office from home. Any suggestions in this regard are welcome.\\n\\nThank you,\\nShilpa

(Replied by SHEROES Coach via SHEROES Career Helpline) Hi Shilpa ,\n\nThank you for writing in ! \n\nWhen an interview and a portfolio are both up-to-the-mark, it can perhaps be a transition issue. \n\nI would recommend thinking along some lines of questioning : \n\n1. Are you applying to positions where you are overqualified ? \n2. Are you able to share how you are willing to adjust to a new company culture in that interview ? \n3. Are the people who are listed as your recommendations on your resume able to articulate your skills properly ?

Hi Bhavya, Great to see you being so proactive! I think the best way to prepare is to go through all the articles and the various events that organisations like Sheroes and others conduct for women on a career break and wanting to restart. That will tell you the kinds of challenges that might be faced by you post the career break and you can accordingly plan to mitigate the same.

Hi Neeraja, I have 2.2 years of Experience in Mindtree as .net developer. I got married and had a gap of around 6 month. Recently I got an offer from deloitte. The thing is I had to quit before my promotion cycle, and my hike letter(2015) was just 10% above my offer letter. I had quit in july 2016. In Mindtree , till first promotion there won't be much hikes. In deloitte, HR is considering the Hike letter of 2015 itself. I don't find it reasonable at all. I have always heard that women don't negotiate and so loose out opportunities. I'm not sure if I can take it forward. Please suggest.

Also i am applying to many jobs published in this portal. But dint receive any positive feedback from any of the companies. Please guide me how can I get a job in my area of interest. Also can you suggest any courses or skills need to be developed to make a comeback?
02 Mar 2017, 03:59pm
(Replied by SHEROES Coach via SHEROES Career Helpline) Hi Preethi, You're supposed to mail your documents to swph@sheroes.in and fill a goggle form for application. Did you do that? If not, do it and then the application would be complete. Once this is done someone from our team will reach out to you.\nI understand your readiness to work, all the applications made by you in the month of March are still active. SHEROES follow a procedure i.e. once you apply to a job you receive a confirmation mail from our end symbolizing that your profile is shared with the recruiter who then make selections based on information given in your profile. If shortlisted, you receive a call directly from them. This may take some time maximum upto 2 months. Stay calm and be persistent in applying, make sure you apply only to the jobs relevant to your profile, random applications won’t help. As far as course is concerned it would depend upon your future plans. Where do you see yourself professionally 3/4 years down the line?\nBest

Hi, I took a gap of 8 years in my career to raise my kids. I could not see much jobs related software testing where companies accept this gap. Can you suggest any courses or skills need to be developed to make comeback?
22 Feb 2017, 10:35am
Hi Manasa, There are 2 ways companies recruit women who have a career gap. 1. They launch specific career comeback programs where they identify roles which they would like to offer to women who have taken a career break 2. Certain positions are identified as also being open to women who have taken a career gap and then posted on job search portals(especially portals like sheroes who cater to the women on a career break) Hence, you should be on the look out for these 2 avenues to find a job related to your past experience. However, as we all understand, this could take time, and in the meantime, you could go through the other types of jobs that are posted on sheroes and other portals and see which of those could closely match your skills and strengths and appy for the same. There are many courses that you can take up to enhance your current skill set but none of them could guarantee a job.. Hello Ramya If you are targetting a certain type of a role and you see that the job descriptions mandate this skill, then you can go ahead and do the course. Otherwise, it may not really help to land a job by doing a course and they will ask for the experience in those areas which you may not be able to provide. Why do you want to move to the HR field? It would definitely be difficult to get a job completely outside of your experience arena, and when you have taken a break. Unless you are able to articulate your passion for this field and add some kinds of learning(by doing courses) or by taking on internship/voluntary assignments in this area to gain some experience, it might be difficult to get a break.

06 Jan 2017, 11:57am
It's true that it becomes difficult to get restart a career after a break as there is so much supply of candidates available today(and many who have not taken any break) that hiring managers may not pick a CV of someone who has had a break. And that's where companies like sheroes and others come in to connect women who have taken a break with organisations who are open to hiring women on a break. So, please explore the websites like sheroes for opportunities and do not restrict it to only ETL testing. Spend some time going thru' the job descriptions for all the jobs posted there and you might come across something that suits your skills and strengths.

As I said earlier, with no prior experience on domain, it would be difficult to get a BA role outside(when there are juniors with experience available, even if you are ok for a lesser salary, they might not want to consider you ). Hence, the best way to do this would be to use your bench period to do some courses on the domain that you are looking to work on and see if there could be some freelancing assignments(even if they are like internships or voluntary positions) that you could work on to gain and prove some experience

05 Jan 2017, 08:05am
Hello Ramya, I don't think there should be an issue to move into a BA role from a functional testing role if your domain knowledge is good. What I have not understood from your questions is whether you are currently employed or on a break? If you are employed and your current organisation is not allowing you to make the change, then you can look at other organisations being in your current role. That's easier. And you could suggest to your current organisation that you will do a stretch BA role for a small project to prove your capability If you are on a break and considering to return and also make a switch, that might get difficult. Also, you are stating a salary requirement. So, matching all this will become difficult. you will have to prioritise what's most important amongst all and if the role is most important, you might have to compromise on the salary.

So, if your institute offers placements after the MBA, please look for suitable options there. Otherwise, focus on the skills acquired and look for roles related to those skills.

Hello Megha I hope you are not restricting your search to only HR/recruiter jobs. When you are trying to get back to the workforce and have some constraints around flexi work hours, you need to have an open mind to check out different types of jobs. You could start by looking at the varierty of jobs posted on the sheroes website and see which of those could potentially suit you and utilise your experiences and skills. Start with that. I know that salary is something that we all have in mind, but it will not harm to even start with a voluntary assignment which will gear you up with confidence, and help the CV look better. So, my advise would be start with something and you will soon find the job you are looking for.

Am i taking the right path here?
19 Dec 2016, 11:24pm
Hi Ramya, You are doing the right thing in keeping in touch with the industry. But the fact also remains that when you want to start working in a new and different role, you could be considered a fresher in that space and hence, might not really get a step up in the designation/salary. Hence, I would advise you to think about what is more important for you when you return from your break - to get that new role which excites you and can take you further in your career in a few years time or the salary which you might get if you continued in a role for which you are experienced. And accordingly, take your decision.

Hi Vaishnavi, You can definitely start working from home and there are freelancing opportunities also available. However, how soon you can get it for the technology set that you have had an experience on, is the question. Thanks, Nisha
03 Dec 2016, 04:29pm
Hi Monisha, There is nothing to be ashamed of. You took the decision as that that time, you believed it was the right thing to do. If you are looking to restart now, I hope you have the situation at home in control as without that, you will not be able to succeed in the new job too. In terms of what kinds of jobs you should look out for, I would recommend you look for something that is apt for your skills and strengths. You could learn a new skill/technology area just because it seems to be the "in thing" or more jobs seem to be in the market for that, but it will not work out for you if you do not have an interest in it. So, please think through all your priorities and based on that, decide what kind of a job would be ideal for you. Once you have that list, start going thru' the jobs on the sheroes portal and other portals and you can decide which one would be ideal for you.

Hi Neeraja, I have been in customer service in the financial sector for 15 years & had taken a break of 5 years. I donot have programming background except for a programming course in C which I had done almost 20 years back. What would be your suggestion on this?
03 Dec 2016, 03:55pm
I think it's not right to consider a job option just because there are plenty of that kind available. Jobs should be decided based on what your skill sets are, what your aptitude and passion is for. Only then you will be successful and even if that particular job is not abundant in the market, you will be able to do justice and fare well. So, please introspect on what you would like to do. 01 Dec 2016, 11:49am
Hi Suma, you can definitely do courses on IOT and data analytics as these are the hot topics these days. However, please be aware that you will be considered a fresher as far as jobs in these areas are concerned and your previous experience may not be relevant to the organisation. And hence, the possibility of you getting a role there or a role at that experience level might be minimal. Secondly, I do not understand how you can have 10 years of experience in Java but not have been involved hands on. If you really want to go in the technical field, then you have to get some handson experience and I would suggest you initially look out for internships or voluntary roles in that technology so that you gain some experience. If you are wanting to get into the management stream, then also, you will need to be either strong technically or on the domain. Just going through some trainings might not be adequate to get a job

28 Nov 2016, 02:52pm
Hi Upasana, You do need to think about why you want to move out of the technical domain into project management. It is a good field to be in, but not everyone succeeds as there are certain attributes that the person needs to have including passion for some of the management fundamentals which differentiate a good project manager from others. Regardless, if you still want to make that switch, I wold recommend you make the switch in your current company so that you continue to be familiar with the organisation and the teams and can make a smooth switch to the other field. Other options that you can look at are training or technical writing.

Hello Pratibha, The reality that we all need to accept is that there is amply supply of resources in the market versus the demand. However, if there is a particular skill which is niche and you have an expertise in that, you can still be in demand. So, please check on the kinds of job opportunities that are getting posted in the Testing area to upskill yourself. Secondly, it would be more appropriate to use portals like Sheroes to look for opportunities as they target organisations who are open to women on a career break wanting to get back.

It is possible to get a part time job or a flexi work arrangement job in the field that you are in. However, you need to keenly look for such opportunities via portals like sheroes. Also, I would advice you look around for startups in the domain that you are working in, which have a more flexi arrangement possible. Mamatha, No one can guarantee that by doing this course, you can get a job. It's all about the demand in the market and the supply that is available. The only way to get options for you are 1. Also, please regularly lookup the sheroes jobs page for work from home jobs and you might find something to suit your skills and you should be able to take it up.

It's a difficult question - one cannot suggest career opportunities without knowing the key skills and strengths of an individual. I would request you to introspect and list down your strengths and what you would like doing and then, if you can send me that list, it would help me suggest some options for you

04 Nov 2016, 03:55pm
I am not an SME on HR and hence, it would be appropriate if you could direct this question to one of the mentors from an HR background. However, while you are working at Infosys, you could see if you can pick up some initiatives probably from the HR department which you could drive for them. This way you will get an exposure to what it is all about and you will get to know if this is what you really want to do. And then, you can invest on the trainings!

How did you manage to take care of both sets of parents in a joint family setup?
01 Nov 2016, 10:22pm
Hello Shivaranjani. As with any relationship that you get into(even when you look for that job that you would like to pursue), I got into my marriage by explaining the priorities that I had in my life. Being an only child to my parents and having no immediate family around us, I was very clear to my future husband that it would be my responsibility to spend time with them and to take care of them whenver the need arises. And it was well respected by him and his family and that's the basis of the successful relationship that I have with both sides of the family!

I have done my engineering in 2012, but due to family issues I could not get into IT field in which I am very much interested.now I'm married and staying in Hyderabad, now I want to join Software jobs. I dnt have any experiences yet.what should I do to get my dream job? Suggest me if I should do any extra IT course or something though I can get selected to the software interviews.
01 Nov 2016, 05:22pm
Hello Yashodhara, Do you have any work experience in any field? If you are really keen on getting into IT(or any field in which you do not have any experience), there a few things to remember 1. you will need to accept that you will be evaluated as a fresher and will need to compete with freshers 2. you should have a very good narrative to be able to impress upon the interviewer why you are shifting your field of work and want to be in this new field of work 3. you should understand the current trends of that industry and read up to see which of those will interest you and learn certain things about them 4. And pick up some projects(either from the institute that you go to study in) or from internships or voluntary assigments available online to pick up the relevant experience of a live project

26 Oct 2016, 02:26pm
Well, you know your field well. Technical support does need shift work(even if not continous night shift, there would be a rotation and some weeks will get you to work in the night). If you want to pursue this field only, then it narrows down your search to those organisations which need support activities done during IST hours and it gets even more difficult to find that job. So, please introspect and identify what other core competencies you possess which can utilise to find roles of a different nature which will get you jobs which have day time work hours. Sometimes a change in our thinking does wonders to both our personality as well as professional life!

Hello Neha, You being on sheroes itself is the first step in finding your next job! Congratulations! It could take some time for the right opportunity to come by. But if you very specific to get back to a role similar to what you were doing before you went on a break, it could possibly take longer. I would suggest that you think about your soft skills(i.e communication/coordination/stakeholder management etc.) and based on what your strength is, you can start looking for types of jobs that you will be able to do quite well. So, start with that, and over a period of time, you could get back to the career path that you wanted to be on.

Hello Divya, Here are some suggestions 1. Keenly follow portals like sheroes who are working with organisations willing to bring back to the workforce, women on a career break 2. Attend events posted on these portals, also, there are many event listings available on the internet which you could go thru' and choose the event which interests you. Attending such events broadens your outlook and gives a different perspective to your thoughts, in addition to gaining knowledge 3. Networking is very essential. So, both online and offline networking needs to be part of your daily routine 4. Think of 2 key strengths that you possess which could make you decide what career options you could look at(the skills you have mentioned are important, however when you want to restart, it is important to look at roles which will play to your strengths). 19 Oct 2016, 11:17am
Sure Rajeshwari. I can understand what you are going thru'. We can connect over email and discuss in detail. For others who are reading this question, I would like to give a general answer not necessarily to help you get that one job that you are looking for(as that's just one aspect of our lives), but to be able to look at a holistic view of where we are Each of us takes a decision at every point in our life based on the priorities that we have. Hence, that decision is absolutely the right one to have been taken then. It's possible that things change as time goes by, and priorities also change. And if you were to look back at the previous decision you had taken, you might feel that it was the wrong one. But, I believe that it was not a wrong decision as it was perfect at that point in time. Hence, do not ever regret the decisions you have taken in your life. If things have changed and it did not work out as you expected it to be, look at the current priorities in your life and decide what you need to do now. Life becomes much easier and happier to live and decision making is also very easy!
