Hi Ritika, if you had reached me earlier, i would have suggested you to continue your current role for a while and do a part-time marketing course so that your experience builds on and you can easily finance your course. Anyhow, now that you are an Marketing MBA already, you should be looking out for a job that is more relevant to your aspirations and also provides in the job training. Places like media houses, publishing setups and product companies hire interns where you can engage in branding work. If are in between jobs and have time at hand, you can join 3-6 months short term course and do freelance work at minimal cost by associating with an existing company too. I am sure one of these is do-able and let me know your thoughts. Regards

Manisha asked

Hi Rajita, I am Manisha from Pune. Presently, I am employed with an Electronics giant MNC at Mid Level managerial post and have a 16 years of Sales and Marketing experience on Electrical and Electronics industry. I do not have a technical qualification. As MBA - Marketing, I rose in my career with sheer passion; self learning; hard work; and strong Sales & Marketing Skills. However, at this juncture I find myself stagnated and looking forward for creative and innovative options in career. I have strong interest in Finance and currently pursuing my CFP thru ICICI direct. On completion, I am probably looking forward to work with some finance company for an year or two and hope to start up on my own after it. I am 45 years old single mother of 19 year old son. I like to travel a lot and adventurous. Want to start up afresh on diversified career path again. Could you please guide on suitable career options and ways?
18 Apr 2015, 02:58pm
Hi Manisha, you seem to be doing well in your career and I know somewhere when one is already almost at its peak, one starts to get bored as it looks like seen that-done it! Keeping in mind the financial independence and funds needed to sustain you two - you must start 'additional' things in-parallel and not risk your current steady job. Good that you started your CFP as an additional qualification - would that not give you a better prospect in your current company for an internal role change? Look at company's CFO struc and see what it takes to get there. You need substantial experience in finance role as another new employer would seldom take a change based on your newly acquired CFP with less or no experience in this domain. While you can consider to branch of later from corporate but let me remind you of the corporate benefits - apart from security and steady income, you earn respect, medical cover, various allowances and are part of bigger group that can support you as needed. While independent work has its own advantage, you have to daily drive your own engine and it takes time to settle & boom. How abt once your course if complete, you attach yourself as a freelancer / advisor - learn the tricks of the trade while you keep your current job or probably get into a mix of Finance profile after discussing it with you Sr managers during your career discussion. If they want to retain you - they would help you with that extra mile. Last & not the least - in any circumstances, never give up your steady job - a bird in hand is better than many in the bush !!!

VRINDA asked

Hi, Rajitha, I am Vrinda from Mumbai. I have 8 years experience in IT infrastructure(Systems Administration and Networking). I had to quit my job when my second son was born. Then due to personal problems I could not go back to work for the past 7 years. But now I desperately want to either go back to work or do some work from my home. I feel very lost right now, please guide me, what I should do to use my knowledge and potential.
11 Feb 2015, 09:32am
Hi Vrinda, thanks for writing in and sharing your thoughts. I have seen at all levels, its never been easy to return from break unfortunately many women go through that. You would agree that for tech jobs, a big job gap further reduces the chances. I would now challenge you to think differently - what other skills do you posses, like teaching, can you try that in schools, corporate training for techies, or institutes/colleges around your area? Any hobby that you think can be converted to gain financial returns. I remember, one of my SW techie friend left India for 3 yrs and was on job gap, while she returned she opened a day-care as she realized how expensive these were in US. Another friend of mine started her - supply from home, the home-cooked food to corporates and that business scaled up quite a bit. Knowledge is not limited to what we use at office, but you should think of pitching yourself where you see a gap is. Think hard and do not give up - this is your chance to comeback! keep me posted and do not increase your no-work gap :-)

Vinita asked

Hi Rajitha, I am Vinita from Mumbai. I worked for 8+ years in the IT field on the mainframes platform. I took a break after my son was born and have a gap of 3 years. I have been trying to get a job from last 1 year but nobody considers my profile because of the break. I even got through a technical interview but got to know that the HR is reluctant to move forward because of my break. Such episodes are making me loose hope that I would be able to get back into the technical field which I really loved. I have even tried applying for jobs for candidates with lesser exp. but still the problem remains. Kindly advise.
14 Oct 2014, 10:26am
Dear Vinita, do not lose heart and keep up the struggle. Its never easy to re-join workforce and its gets tougher with increasing gap. Companies like Accenture, IBM, Infosys, Oracle etc have diversity programs and run initiatives on getting women back to work - did you try that channel. Also, did you internally get referred from any of your friend in these or other companies so that your CV is not lost in crowd? You clearly have the desire and passion to get back - untilll you get a regular job, do you want to use your skills in teaching, working with an idea or hobby that you can start on your own to generate income, try your son's school if they need a computer instructor for higher classes or you start taking tuitions at home. However, do not give up - i repeat as this phase needs your strength, determination and ability to think of alternate routes, so why stuck with just one option ? Let me know what you think!

Hi, Rajitha, I am Ruchira from Mumbai. I am commerce graduate but could not complete my Chartered accountancy course due to financial problems. Now I am a homemaker with 2 wonderful daughters. I want to start working again from home. I have worked in finance field only but now I am interested in teaching or counseling. I have no formal education as regards to counseling. I have God's gift I can mix with people very well, understand their problems non judgementally. Can you guide me..
11 Aug 2014, 09:26am
Dear Ruchira - your desire to do something is incredible. In today's competitive world, one also needs some certifications/ attestations to showcase readiness as this aids chances to get employment. Hence -pls take up a part-time or short term course on teaching. Many schools in Mumbai offer it - like Poddar, Arya Vidya Mandir and so on. Course duration (teachers training) is typically 1 year and would equip you. As you understand, apart from a great attitude, our great degrees (and experiences) would get us really recognized. So get started - contact educational institutes for vocational course and acquire prof degree, I know many women with kids around me have gone through same situation. Some of them are teaching in places like Tree house, Euro kids and others in higher classes. Something you can start right away is home tuitions too. Good luck & get going. Keep me posted on your success.

Hi Kaveri, thanks for reaching out. I have gone through your profile and suggest you tweak it to mention details on your educational institute, HR majors, key projects as intern or otherwise that you have been involved in. What I have seen is - many freshers either get campus recruited or get in touch with their senior batch students to get inducted. Have you tried these options yet? Other options include - joining an entrepreneur, like HR consultancy, training institute to teach or being a student counselling team can be a good start points for you to help gain the market experience. I see SHEROES advertising such job options and you may try quickly getting engaged with such options to minimize any gaps between your education and 1st job. Let me know how it goes once you have identified work in this small startup ventures that proves to be an immense learning ground. Keep focussed and positive. Regards

Hai Rajitha , I am currently based in Mumbai. I have done my MBA in HR and Marketing and was working with Bank as a Branch Operations Manager for 7.5 years . I have quit recently as needed to be at home for my child. Request your assistance if there are any options for work from home
29 Jul 2014, 07:05am
Hi Shilpi, good to hear from you and how nice it would have been to have your profile more detailed. My response to you will be based on your skillset and stakeholders you were handling, so request you to share your details on areas handled. Given the banking secure IT infra, it may be a challenge to have a WFH option. However, as you have handled ops and perhaps customer relationship, their may be opportunities to act as relationship manager - where you visit selected clients and manage their portfolio or perhaps you may explore a slight shift to look at options beyond bank and check the emerging ecommerce or IT industry where it is possible to have flexi time schedule/ content management and cust handling options. Stay connected, update your details and look at such jobs posted in career section. I am around to help you guide as much as I can. Stay focussed and positive.

Pratibha asked

I Rajitha , I am Pratibha from Bangalore. I have 4 years of experience in IT industry covering testing and coding. I have taken a break to be with my daughter. Now i want to get back since she is going to school. Please suggest whether i should join IT again or work from home or get into teaching (schools or colleges since i am a B.Tech grad). My concern is the long working hours in IT field. I am ready to explore other areas too. Kindly help. Thank you
18 Jul 2014, 06:38am
Dear Pratibha, I am glad that you are thinking of balanced options. While getting back is an urge and it is clear that you plan to spend substantial time with your little one as she blooms. Corporate world in most places continues to be a cold, competitive and demanding full time profession. Be it product dev, coding or testing - there will be production deadlines and go live beta scenarios, and these might seem a bit overwhelming for you at this stage. Though career choice is best to be thought by yourself and your immediate family, what I can suggest from your question above is - take something lighter where you have a handle on time at the same time fulfilling use of your skills. Guest lecturers in colleges near your area can be a good option. Another one could be teaching computer in schools and coaching institutes for stipulated time. You can also take part-time coding and testing assignments that you can execute from home (this will need you to re-connect with your ex colleagues). However, if you have space and resources to do stuff from home - you can take tuitions for kids (science/computers) up till higher grades or if you love kids have a kids club running at your scale ...so Pratibha, opportunities are endless. Just listen to your true calling and keep in touch to share back your success stories.

Hi Rajita, I am sneha from Guwahati, Assam. I have been working ever since I remember in various leading corporates & am now on a break since last 5 months. I got a little bored with the way things were moving, although my career was at a high. Plus I wanted to give some quality time to my 1 yr old daughter. With the financial independence gone, ivam little bothered yes. But what bothers me most is the uselessness of myself. I dont see any agenda for myself for the day when I wake up in the morning & this bothers me. I want to do something like work from home sort of, but I am not sure what & how. Kindly advise how do I go abt it bcz after 12 years of full time working, I have zero knowledge on the opportunities available
07 Jul 2014, 12:50pm
Dear Sneha, I see you as an energetic ambitious girl who seeks relevancy in how she spends her time. This is great as you already have substantial experience to go back and ride that corporate bus again. At the outset, start connecting with your ex peers and colleagues as networking will open your avenues regarding available opportunities. Also, I encourage you check this SHEROES site on jobs that are WFH and you can be flexible enough and eventually as your daughter grows up, perhaps you can come back full time. Such work from home jobs primarily are in the field of content writing, brands and market management, educational sales, customer addessals and so on. So pls do search on Sheroes job page and simply google for all wfh opportunities alongwith reconnecting to check & get apt referrals. All the best.

Dear Archana, it sure looks like a well thought decision that you want to get back to work and are ready to step back in corporate world. As you have a tech background and test engineers are typically always in-demand, I suggest you: (1) first identify the companies you would be interested in. This could be based on location preference, proximity from home & commuting facilities so that you can balance your personal & professional time. (2) Apply your candidature to shortlisted companies via company portal, placement consultants, walk-in drives or best via internal referral / friend. (3) Make sure your CV is ready and your professional profile exists in linkedin. You will need to pursue till you get in and make sure that your professional gap doesn't widen beyond specific timeframe as IT industry is dynamic. I wish you good luck and believe with a strong will and family support, you soon will be there.

Please help me with your valuable suggestions on how i can start this. thanking you.
25 Mar 2014, 06:08pm
Dear Sreeja, in today's times once decision to work in a specialized field has been made, there are multiple aids available, so you can smartly use them to get going. As a newbee writer - I would suggest you to perhaps start simple by writing your own blog, covering specific areas of your interest that would attract readers to connect up and contribute, this way you build up a community. Groups on portals like - LinkedIn.com by the name 'Content management professionals', Instructional Design and e-learning professionals' and many more would also connect you with like minded community. You can mention about your writing skills in social networking sites along with offering to write for clients on contract basis and that is how you will gain experience. Another good way is to contact magazines/ newspapers (published or digital formats) ...there are so many cases where I see contributions from readers are requested. All these will provide you much needed exposure which you can then proudly quote in your resume and if desire so take a full time writing job.

Thank you so much for your advice and encouraging reply, Rajita. Yes, yo are quite right on most counts, I haven't approached too many agencies as yet and most assignments are a result of referrals. I just don't know how to leverage that given my low networking skills. But, thank you so much, your response helps and also boosts my confidence.

Namrata asked

Hi Rajita, I am writing to ask you for advice related to my next career move. To give you a brief outline of my career graph, I am a visual specialist with over 14 years of work experience with leading Indian retailers in fashion, lifestyle and premium international brands. Having worked as a visual merchandiser for several years I wished to take a sabbatical as well as diversify my skills to include designing for retail environments. I quit my job in July 2013 with this intention and went on to do a one year post graduate diploma in design, after which I took some time off. Now, recharged and rejuvenated, I wish to join a creative or design agency in the role of a retail creative professional. The setback I am facing is that so far I have not received an encouraging response from such agencies, I’m not sure if this is due to • A lack of specific technical skills such as interior designing, architectural know how, graphic design etc. combined with my mid-senior level of experience which entails higher compensation • Or sparse networking skills and reach. (I fit the description of an artist immersed in the task at hand.) • Or if I need to repackage my profile. The following link will direct you to my updated visual resume that has all the required details on my academic and professional history. https://www.behance.net/gallery/32127899/Infographic-Resume Please do let me know how I could get a foothold in my chosen arenas at my stage of career. Thank you so much for your time and advice. Namrata.

Dear Mentor, It is inspiring to see women guiding women to move forward as we only can truly understand each others struggles. Kudos to that! I need your guidance here - I have a total experience of 10 years in IT industry including 2 onsite US assignments. My qualifications are engineering and M.Tech in Comp. Sc. I have a joint family setup where my 6 month old is getting looked after but the work+travel timelines (12 hours) are posing a big inconvenience for everyone.Plus if I look at my career I am unable get the house chores and cooking done. I have thought about change in career but I keep feeling that I know only what I know, not feeling confident enough to take up any other profession and then start from scratch. If I give up my present job, conditions at home will force me to become a house wife which I do not want to. Feeling confused on what exactly should I change, a new job, different profession or just quit and take a sabbatical. Please guide as per your experience of profession and child rearing.
