Hi Kalpgam Your best way forward is to find a job as a sales consultant or outbound sales caller or you could look at becoming a distributor for a pyramid marketing company like Avon or Amway. Wish you all the luck!

Hey Shagorika, Firstly, thanks for your guidance to us here. This is Sweety. I have a scattered experience of around 7 years. Scattered I say coz I was not in one industry and role. I worked with an ad agency, worked with a B2B firm & then with a real estate firm. The profile was of marketing communications. Had to quit as my last company closed down. My issue is - In all this span, I do not have any expertise since there was a break. Also there are no major achievements which I can boast of. A Jack of all trades basically. Now I want to join full time but mostly all organisations ask what is your expertise- either they need digital marketing specialist or content specialist or a pr specialist. But I have done a bit of all these but not really proficient in any. Had given interviews also but not really cracked any. What I can guess is I do not fit into their defined roles. It has been a year since m at home. I am really confused how to go ahead and my self esteem is at lowest. Sometimes, I feel should jump into content writing but no major experience there. Other times its like should do a digital marketing specialization but not sure if it will help although I see it as a requirement in every posting. Am at a stage where it seems I will need to start from scratch again. Look forward for your guidance. Thanks, Sweety

Hi Sweety I empathise with your predicament and it must be frustrating sitting at home or not being able to crack the job you want. The good news is that you have some experience in all aspects of marketing so you would be a good judge of what aspect interests you and where your skills lie. So identify your core area of interest, skills and experience (if any) and focus on developing it by doing a short course and trying to get freenlance projects. Once you develop some confidence in your abilities you'll be able to approach interviews and companies with greater belief and a clear reason why you are the best candidate they could hire for the role. Best of luck !

Hello Ma'am. I am a young professional who has been working with start ups till now. I have been working as a BDE till now with a bit of marketing work involved. I wish to change my domain from Sales to Marketing. I would really appreciate if you could share some insights with me related to your work, Branding & Digital Marketing, to be particular. What does the work mainly involve & the qualities one must have to pursue their career in the same. Your response would really help me clear my dilemma. Thanks for your time.
08 Sep 2016, 09:28pm
Hi Urvashi Changing professions from sales to marketing can be an exciting but scary journey and I am glad you are doing your research before making your decision. My work is that of a brand strategist and involves understanding consumer trends. motivations and needs and the business and brand goals of a company and creating a brand strategy that creates a sustainable advantage for the company and a superior customer experience for its consumers. Of course you are a young professional so the work you'll be doing on a daily basis will be different and within marketing there are many directions your career could take eg - performance marketer, content specialist, digital design etc. However let me outline some qualities you will need. The most important is an ability to keep up with a constantly evolving landscape - marketing and technology is transforming so rapidly, that its important you dont fear change but instead thrive on it. Along with that comes being flexible and open minded as trends and techniques are in such rapid flux that what worked yesterday wont defintely work today and tomorrow. The next quality you need is a lot of passion and interest to stay ahead of the curve and be proactive about your work and learning. As you have probably learnt in sales, people and relationships can make or break and the same applies here. You'll find yourself in cross-functional teams with subject matter experts from other domains and you need to work with them as a team player and display leadership qualities. Hope this helps with you dilemma. Best of luck!

Hi, I am a Digital Marketer heading various startups and played a crucial role in setting up the team and revenue generation for them. I quit my job couple of months back to start my own work as Consultant. I did get one client to start with (it was a reference from my earlier CEO). But now I am not able to grasp any further opportunity as Freelancer/Consultant. People are more interested in for Full Time Employee Profile. Please advise or refer :). Rgds, Pragya 9212279567
06 Sep 2016, 03:36pm
Hi Pragya The good news is that your skill set is in high demand. The not-so-good news is that working as a freelancer/consultant is difficult and agonising even - as you have no doubt discovered. My advice is for you to identify companies/projects where they dont need a full time employee and/or cant afford to pay the salaries of good digital marketers and would be happy to pay for your time as long as it's part-time. Secondly, reach out to your professional contacts clearly stating your value proposition as a consultant and ask them for references/projects as people who have worked with you previously are most likely to work with you in this avataar. Thirdly, go to digital marketing conferences and meetups and network as much as you can and research the attendees, speakers before you meet them so you stand out from the crowd. And hey, its been only a couple of months, dont lose heart and wish you well!

Hi I love to write on different aspects of life and have created a blog as well but I don't know how to increase my reach for the same and use that as a source of income.can you help me with this?
02 Sep 2016, 10:16pm
Hi Arpita Glad you are expressing yourself and a blog is a great way to do it. Here are some basics that you should be following to increase reach if you arent already. 1. Share your blog on social media and grow a community around your writing and topics of interest. Pick one or maximum two social media platforms and publish your blog on social media. 2. Build an email list of visitors to your blog by offering them something valuable should they opt in. That email list is very valuable because in essence they are choosing to subscribe to your blog and are interested in what you have to say. Reach out to your email list once a month and offer them links to your blog posts. 3. Guest post on other blogs and comment on relevant forums and on quora 4. Syndicate your blog. When it comes to monetising your blogs, remember most blogs are a springboard for other paid services/products like ebooks, webinars, online courses, speaking engagements etc. However the most direct way to make money for your blog is through advertising and affiliate marketing on your site. However be careful that you balance providing valuable content with trying to make money by selling real estate on your website. Best of luck!

hi although I seem to great at my job. for some reason end being disliked by superior everytime they find I am efficient. please help me. how do I deal with a person who is negative and egotistical
02 Sep 2016, 09:22am
Hi Monalee Sorry to hear that you are having this issue in your career, though its become suprisingly common. And I know that it must affect your productivity and cause you emotional distress. Insecure people tend to be affected by other people's competency and success and use their position to stop that success even temporarily. Firstly, learn to detach yourself from this situation and dont take it so personally that it makes you paranoid. Secondly, try to include your boss in your success so that he/she feels less threatened, this may minimize the conflict between you both. Thirdly, document everything diligently so that there's no 'he said, she said' at a later date and in case the situation gets out of control, you have evidence of both your words and actions. Here's wishing you luck !

Hi Natasha I understand that when you are in a career/job thats not satisfying it does affect your confidence but on the bright side, you have now identified your interests and passion and you are bound to find it more satisfying and it'll yield better success. Marketing/digital marketing/website design are very broad areas and there are many subsets where you could find your niche. If its website design lets say, do a course so you are technically proficent and also try to do as many freelance projects as you can find or and build a robust portfolio of work. Demonstrate your skills and projects through your personal website which you can share with potential employers and clients. Best of luck!

Hi I am currently looking for a job opportunity in the marketing field. I am more interested in coming up with strategies for marketing plans. However, I ultimately want to get into marketing for event management firms. How do you suggest I go about it? Is it the right direction?
30 Aug 2016, 08:15pm
Hi Ayesha If you want to go into marketing for event management firms, then thats what you should focus on. There's no good or bad direction for your career, its what you decide to make of your choices. So identify the top 5 event management firms you would love to work with, some big, some medium size and reach out to their HR team and if its a smaller company, directly to their founder/owner. Figure out the opportunities available with those companies if any and if your top 5 dont have any for now, pick another 5 and start the process again. In the event business your best teacher is experience and good ol fashioned grind. Best of luck!

Hi Vishaka You have a foundation in marketing through your MBA and since you graduated only last year, I dont think your experience of the last one year as a wealth manager is too much of a barrier. Hi Deepika Companies today are far for flexible with work schedules for young mothers than before. If you can work out a schedule with your current employer than of course that s preferable. Alternatively, most digital agencies have jobs for planners, community managers and content writers that are flexible and you could start approaching them. Best of luck!

Hi Your profile tells about your great journey. I wanted to ask a question in regard with the brand establishment and digital marketing of a ecommerce start up. What do you think should be the strategy, should we go with a low or high digital marketing budget in the first phase of initiation, how should we make the presence in the market, is playing at lower level and then getting to the next level not very apt? Thanks
01 Aug 2016, 07:09am
Hi Surabhi Thanks you for kind words. Honestly, I cant give you a strategy till I understand the e commerce company, its offering, consumer base and business goals better. If your ecommerce company is in a over crowded marketplace and is not a dominant player, than you need to think very strategically on how to make every marketing rupee count because you cant outspend your competitors and you would have a high customer acqusition goal. Creating a buying moment through discounting your product is an easy tactic that most online commerce companies employ but use it with discretion because you also want to build the brand. To answer your second question, almost no company/brand successfully transitions from being a mass brand and then pitching itself in the premium segment, so you are right, its not apt. Best of luck with your marketing planning and campaign.

Hi Chithra How well versed are you with marketing fundamentals ? If you believe you are then try and get feedback from people who have interviewed you but not hired you and ask them where they feel you could improve either your knowledge base or your presentation skills. If you dont have an understanding of the fundamentals, please learn them through short courses. Also, my suggestion is dont start a business till you have gained some experience in the field and are confident that this is where you see your future. As for freelance marketing work, thats a good idea and I would keep approaching smaller advertising agencies in the city you live in, they could have some projects for you to work on. Best of luck!

Hi Sudha Make a list of your target companies and find out the name of the relevant people either in their marketing or HR teams - you can find out this information on the company website or through LinkedIn (get yourself a LinkedIn premium account) and write to those people a personalised letter on the value you could bring to that company and asking for a meeting to explore the possibilty of doing some freelance work. Do your research on the companies, present a clear compelling case for why you are good at what you do and it'll bring results. Best of luck!

Hi Anu It takes a village to raise a child and if you want to get back to your career, you'll need the support of your village (husband, parents, in-laws, siblings) to pitch in. How much can you count on them to help take care of your child whilst you are work or doing a late shift. Hi Anitha First rule of looking for a job, get back in touch with people who have already worked with you and know that you are good. Ask them for opportunties in their current place of employment. Ex colleagues and bosses are a good place to start. Secondly, go back to the last place you worked and see if there are any openings there. Of course, headhunters and job sites are the obvious choices but I always start with places and people I know. Best of luck!

Hi Nikita In the last two years a lot of technology and platform developments have taken place, you could simply spend a few hours everyday for the next few weeks to self-learn or if you are more comfortable do a course online. In the meantime I would also start applying for jobs because that process itself could take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Best of luck!

Hi Vallika There are the obvious jobs like telemarketing, proof reading documents etc you could do from home however my sense is you would do well with something more challenging. Do explore the field of social media marketing and content and see if you have interest or skills in that space - especially if you write well. Also be careful whilst applying for ' working from home' jobs - they are plenty of scammers out there

Hi Shenbagapriya You are right being up-to-date is critical iin IT however I am not sure what part of software you work in and therefore what skills you need to update. There are plenty of courses online and offline that are designed for people in your field, my guess is that since you have been out of the game for so long, you should do a more foundational course rather than something very niche. Best of luck in finding the right course.

Hi Shagorika, I working as a Marketing Professional for last 7 Years Presently i am working with Pharma company. I have done by Masters in Marketing. My concern is that i have knowledge whatever responsibities given to me i finish it with good results. But my weekeness it that i have ideas but i keep it with me. I cannot express it with confidence because on which i miss many opportunities. What should i do to express it in right way??
04 Jul 2016, 12:22pm
Hi Shradha Great question and its good you are self aware. Sometimes its very intimidating to express ideas verbally and sell that idea to an audience. I recommend when you have an idea, you write it down and detail it out. By writing it down, you'll get further clarity on the idea and then give you confidence to approach your boss or your team etc. Once you have written down the idea, you could create a presentation or a concept note out of it and share it with your boss via email and ask for a discussion after. This way when you do meet him/her he/she's already prepped and will be ready to have a discussion rather than wait for you present your idea. Hope this helps and good luck!

What have you graduated in, what field interests you, what professional strengths do you think you have - for example you may enjoy interacting with people and could look at a career in retail or sales etc. Identify the field that interests you, make sure you have the skills needed to start in that field and if not get educated through an internship or a short course. 02 Jul 2016, 12:51pm
Hi Tulika You have an impressive CV and I am sure you are great at what you do. My advice is to look at two broad directions. One is approach creative agencies, digital shops etc and pitch yourself as a planner or a strategist. They will be culturally more open to flexi working hours. Second, look up your old bosses/mentors who have a high opinion of your work. Approach them and seek out roles in their current companies or to recommend you to people/companies they know are more open to flexi work hours. Best of luck!

Hi Roopashri If you want to be a marketer, you must be well equipped to be a digital-first marketer and understand the way modern marketing, consumers and technologies are shaping up. Hi Pallavi Congratulations on your baby! Well its both an exciting and scary time because you can now shape your career to whatever you wish it to be. And getting educated in your field of interest is always a good start. My guidelines are this - figure out the field that interests you, lets say languages because you mentioned learning French and then the jobs or career options in that industry, translator, teacher etc. Once you have a target job and companies in mind, educate yourself and aim to become a subject matter expert in your field. All this takes time, patience and huge amounts of determination but it can be done. Wishing you a lot of luck.

28 Jun 2016, 07:56am
Hi Nikunj Applying for a job is a tough process for everyone and its easy to feel undervalued and get disheartened. However one month is a rather short period of time in a job search so dont lose heart. Make sure your resume is very well written and professional and perhaps you can write a personalised cover letter for each employer which tells them how you are best suited for the job you are applying for. Best of luck and I hope you find your ideal job soon.

Hi, I am currently on a baby break and wish to get back to work sooner. In my last assignment at a resort in Goa, along with Sales I have handled marketing as well. 28 Jun 2016, 07:19am
Hi Nivetha Congratulations on your baby! It's good to know you have some experience in digital marketing, the question is what do you want to do moving forward. The digital marketing ecosystem is quite broad and its good to have some specific skillsets that make you more employable. My suggestion is you do both, start reading up on digital marketing, take some short online courses through coursera or udemy once you identify interest areas and also try and get a job in a digital-first agency so that you can learn on the job. Hi Monika Thanks for reaching out. What aspect of digital marketing do you want to focus on ? Analytics, design, mobile, cloud,IoT, your options from IT to digital marketing are many. My suggestion is first hone into the area(s) that interest you and then figure out the technical skills you may be lacking to make the switch. There are some excellent short term courses both online and offline you could pursue. Secondly the world of digital marketing is disrupting every day so do make sure you commit to "60 minutes of learning" every day and keep abreast of the latest news and innovations that are happening. This will give you the know-how to start approaching companies and making your career switch. All the very best to you!!

Hi can u make me understand how social media marketing like FB, Twitter, instagram, youtube, Tumblr works to promote business. Pls help. I really need to know. Also SEO, email marketing et al.
17 Jun 2016, 05:00am
Hi Suranjana Thanks for reaching out and congratulations on running your business, it's never easy! I would like to know the business you are in, who your customers are whether you sell online or not. However let me give you a few rules to start with - focus on your business goals and decide what is the problem you want social media, email or SEO to solve. Clear goals and strategy is most important. Secondly. Choose one social media platform to start with - the one that's most relevant for your business and spend all your efforts and money in that rather than try and do too many things. On social media put yourself in your customers shoes and listen and be helpful rather than rush to sell your product. People like conversations on social media not an obvious sales pitch. Thirdly, when you produce tweets or posts or pictures or videos, any sort of content really, remember to make it easy to find by using hashtags or tags and try and populate it online so people find you easily. Also I strongly suggest using Facebook ads to promote your content and take people to your site and capture their email so you get a database of potential customers. There are plenty of online tutorials to get you started on DIY SEO especially if your site is built on Wordpress etc and once you have some experience and cash, hire a SEO freelancer to help you. You should try and do as much lead generation as possible through your website and social media by getting people s emails. Email marketing is a very effective tool and again remember figure out how to add value to your customers through email marketing and don't spam them too much. And learn to recycle your email newsletters or offers - for example by changing the subject line of the email and sending it to new customers or those who hadn't opened it in the first round. Finally, just remember please don't do too much. Focus on one or two marketing activities but be really really good at those. Hope this helps. Best of luck !!!
