Hey, I have just started my own self-hosted blog. How can I promote it
28 Feb 2017, 02:49pm
Hi Sheetal,\n\nThe easiest way to promote a blog is by sharing it yourself and having\nothers share it as well. For that to happen, your blog needs to have those\nelements that would invite people to read and share. Look for that one\nfocus point and then work around that in your blog. Make good use of social\nmedia. You could also use Whatsapp to share the link with your friends and\nfamily.\n\nHope this helps.\n\nRegards,\nSmriti\n\n*And then I realized, adventures are the best way to learn*\n\n

Hi Dipali, It takes time to setup any new venture. These foundation years matter. Plan out well. Set processes. Network. Look out for new wats to reach out your customers. Adopt technology. Use whatsapp, social media as your marketing tools. They will help you acquire and promote business. While your business should have your 100%, I understand that few extra bucks would help you . Few work from home options that you could explore are https://sheroes.in/jobs/search/skill/location/employment-type/work-from-home/career-level/company/page:1 Hope this helps. Best, Smriti

(Replied by SHEROES Coach via SHEROES Career Helpline) Hi Ashwini ,\n\nThank you for reaching out ! My name is Adi and I will be helping you with this query. Our apologies on the delayed response\n\nYou can take a quick look at the jobs available by clicking on " work from home jobs " on our home page. You can further filter these to be relevant to you by adding more search tags for example on the field you want to work in. Say searching " data entry work from home " for data entry jobs.\n\nHowever, for us to be able to guide you appropriately and for any potential employer to review your application a lot of information regarding your work experience, where and when did you get your diploma , skillsets apart from medication , projects you have worked on, whether you want to work full time or part time or want to freelance or work from home etc. should be present on your profile. I am taking this opportunity to recommend that you fill out all the details on your profile page - since your profile acts as both your resume and cover letter on Sheroes. Once you have filled in your profile, do write in to us again. I look forward to hearing from you.

The education as well as the experience both can be presented in the desired perspective. All we need is a clarity from your end - what is it that you are looking for. Once your profile is appropriately done, you could apply to the jobs. Hope this helps.

Hi Smriti, I am an MBA (HRM) with around 9 years work experience in different industries - market research, BPO, online sales (the latest job). I have been on a sabbatical for 6 years as I have a toddler and a 2 month old to take care of. I am confused as to my future career path - on one hand, I want to get back to the corporate world, and on the other - want to start something up on my own. In the former case, I am not sure how to equip myself well so as to brace the competition and secure a job. Please advise. Thanks for all your help! Preeti
10 Jun 2016, 08:54am
Hi Preeti, Since you have been on a sabbatical for 6 years, I believe you are now all charged up to take up any challenge that comes your way. Be it joining a formal organized workforce or having the chaos of a startup - you are all geared up. But both require clarity. If joining a corporate role - you need to first find out what would be that be - MR, BPO or online work. They might require some revision or skill upgradation. But if you have something else on your mind - do that. Startup. You would enjoy it the most and at the same time create jobs for others :) And there is no better time to do it than now. Hope this helps. Wish you all the best

Dear Manu, You have got a wonderful skill. Plus you know the power of online. In today's world, it doesnt matter where you are working from. Virtual world has give us that flexibility. Here is what I suggest 1. Connect with your old employer - see if they have work from home opportunities or flex work options 2. Connect with gaming companies in the west. They are often looking for outsourcing partners for such work. 3. Since you understand fraudulent activities, banking / insurance would be a good sector for you. See if you want to do a certification course in insurance. That would open up great possibilities for you. 4. You could also look up data analytics kind of roles with digital companies. That work can easily be done from home. Hope this helps.

Hello, Smriti! A friend in the start-up world in India recommended Sheroes.in to me based on my questions. I am working with a company that is hoping to release a version of their app in India. I was wondering on what kinds of price ranges for in-app purchases are feasible in India. If you could give me any advice on how I would go about determining that, I would really appreciate it! If this isn't an appropriate question for this forum, I would appreciate that, as well. Many thanks!
08 Jun 2016, 02:51pm
Hi Suja, Thanks to your friend for the recommendation. This question doesnt directly fit in here but here are my 2 cents on the query you have asked. We have to find the right price for the product because if we overprice it, it doesnt sell and if we underprice it - we dont make enough. We start with finding the the right target audience and what would be the target ARPU? Since there is cost in acquiring those users, you would want to recover those costs while making those sales. Second point we need to find - what will be our purchase ration? How many people from our users will end up buying? Use these two metrices to find the price. Keep in mind to - 1. Start backward - have a target ARPU in mind and then do your calculations 2. Give user options 3. Balance the objects with the difficulty levels / stages Hope this helps and gives you a starting point. Wish you all the best

Hi Priyanka, Sales is a part of marketing. Sales gives you the business insights which the marketing team then uses for the promotions, product enhancement, pricing etc. Folks in marketing, when they start with sales, tend to have a better understanding of the business. Thus I would suggest to do a stint in sales and then move to marketing.

Then in 2010 I joinwd a e- commerce company as a quality analyst for 8 months and then resigned as I was pregnant with twins. Now the point is this , I have only 1.6 yr of experience. Now I am looking for a job , I don't know which sector to join. In my view bpo is most convenient as they provide customer service jobs in bulknd with decent salary too. I think other than this I won't be able to get a job. Hi Smriti, I'm interested in starting my own line of business in rural crafts. Can you help me in advising the approach to finance and incorporation.( vasudhaa.v@gmail.com) Thanks Vasudha .V
16 May 2016, 09:16am
Hello Vasudha, Its always a pleasure to meet people with entrepreneurial streak and with ones in crafts is even better. Here is what I would suggest: While crafts do seem lucrative and people love crafts - the sales is less relatively. I am not sure which rural crafts are you referring to here and whether you intend to sell them online or offline and your marketing / promotional plans - so before you go all into it - I suggest testing some waters first. Try with some exhibitions offline and through a marketplace like paytm if you are looking to sell online. Once you are confident, connect with a CA who will help you with incorporation and other legal formalities. As for finances - ask for family to invest small. Once business is in a decent position - approach bank for loan or look for angel investing. Help is around if you know what to ask for, when to ask for and whom to ask for. Hope this helps.

Since you have been in merchandising, you could also move onto some fashion e-commerce company and handle the category. I would suggest picking an option that is of interest. Wish you all the best

Hi Smriti, I have MBA degree from Jamia Hamdard and I have around 14 months of market research experience after which I took a break for a year after my marriage and then I started working with my husband on a start-up which I pursued for 18 months. My husband was working part-time on the startup and after we relocated to Bangalore, he got very busy with his new job and then we got pregnant in Oct 2015. Long story short, we decided to fold up our start-up and I am really lost at what to do next. With a small baby to take care of, I am looking at opportunities that will help me get connected with interesting colleagues and work style that will allow me to take care of a new-born. I don't want to go back to market research and since my past experience has been a bit unstable so I don't know what and how to look for new opportunities. I am open to invest time and money on training/ courses, provided I have a clear plan on what to do next after that. Would be great if you have any suggestions for me. Regards, Tanu

Hi Prerna, Starting up a business is getting easier day by day. For business setting- the legal formalities, business registration etc. get in touch with a CA who will take care of all the points. On the product side, check out the traditional markets for product supplies etc. There would be a lot of vendors looking for newer clients. But before you do that, you need to figure out the kind of jewellery you want to do - ethnic, funky or some other type. Accordingly look out for suppliers. Hi Anju, For any knd of work format, one needs to build up their profile accordingly. For the work from home options, I suggest, create your profile, add skills and interest for the kind of work you would like to do and then search for options accordingly. There are a lot of work from home options available. Search as per interest. If required, do a short course to add to your skills. Wish you all the best.

Hi Anjum, Congratulations on starting up. You have taken the first step towards your chosen career. Running a Recruitment consultancy will be different from just being an HR.One is running a business and the other is doing a job. To run a business you need to have a plan - identify prospects, tap them and then deliver the promise. Also you need to see what would it take to run the business in terms of resources - human, financial and others. If you see my mentor notes, you will see a business plan format. You could use that to start. Wish you all the best.

17 Mar 2016, 01:46pm
Hello Aditi, We are all there once in life where we are confused as to what should we do. Our brain plays games with us, taking us in all directions and leaving us all confused. What one should do at this point is take a step back. Think about one's strengths and interests. Then see if they have the skills to pursue those interests. If not - acquire those skills. If yes, then see where could they start and plan the roadmap. In you case it could be - you start in a chosen creative field, gain some experience and then gradually move on to start something in the same field. Or if you are clear about your creative idea and confident about it, connect with a mentor from that field and start up. Talking to people from th industry helps. Wish you all the best.

10 Mar 2016, 05:52pm
Hi Priyanka, I see you want to explore more of your creative side. That can be done once yu decide to give it some serious thought. For example, to start with a book - once you get that story idea, you will automatically find time to write down those story bits. And when you see it developing, you will bring it in your main role. As for fashion designing, that requires some special skills which can be honed via short courses. You could join a weekend course if you want to go down that lane. For other creative ideas, you could join up hobby classes and see what inspires / works for you. Whatever you do, it should make you happy and satisfied at the end of the day and you should look forward to doing more of it every morning. Wish you all the best.

Hello Romika, I think you already know the answer to your query. The industry you are in requires continuous upgradation of skills. 6 years is a long time. The industry has moved on, acquired new techniques, new skills and new methods to solve problems. Also the problems are a lot different now. To tackle them, it would be great to learn the newer techniques, add new skills. DO a short certification and upgrade your profile. That would be helpful. How can i enhance my skill & move to brand oriented jobs(current role is more of co-ordination & execution of ATL & Planning & execution of BTL) Note:I am not an under performer as i have always been rated Good or Excellent .Also after my immediate boss quit & most of my colleagues also quit same time.i took over 90% of job & managed it for a year.

12 Feb 2016, 11:22am
Hi Smita, You are a brave SHEROES working towards your dream. I wish you all the best and success for the startup. I understand how hard it can get to start and sustain a startup before you start making some money to run it everyday. And so you need to carefully use your resources at hand - be it the cash, or the human resource who is helping you build up or the product you are actually working on. Work with freelancers or work from home professionals. All help control costs. Work out of home or a co-working space to save on operational costs. Since you have already quit your job and are 100% in the venture, your co-founder, could help with the other money part of it to keep it running. Picking up some consulting work might help but then it should not sway you away from your own venture. Talk to your co-founder and figure out a way. Discuss the responsibility and if picking up some extra work could help. Also it should be dealt very carefully keeping in mind your team as well. Hope this gives you some clarity. Wish you all the best.

10 Feb 2016, 03:42pm
Hi Samita, I saw your SHEROES profile and it looks nice. I also understand where you are coming from and the desire to discover yourself. There comes a point in everyone's life when they start wondering - is this what I wanted to do? AM I happy? So you are not alone. All you have to do is take a step back and ask yourself a few questions: 1. Where lies my interest? 2. Is this making me happy? What will make me happy? 3. Is this what I want to do? 4. At the end of it, when I look back - is this what I want to see and be at peace? Once you have answers to these questions, you would know what you are looking for. Take a sabbatical. Travel to unknown lands. You would meet the missing you. Think of things as a blank page and you can write anything; paint it in your favorite color. And only you know what you would like to write or which is your favorite color. Identify your options and then evaluate. And we could connect again. Till then take risks. Have a little adventure. For they will tell you what you have always been looking for. Wish you all the best.

09 Feb 2016, 01:29pm
Hi Mansi, Your profile looks good. Infact people are looking for talent such as yourself. You have had a huge experience in media & marketing - launching brands, building them, growing them. Thats your skill and your strength. You say that you want to start something of your own. Have you thought of something or do you have any ideas as to what it could be? Would you like to start a services company or launch your own products? It could be that you would like to use your experience to start a brand consulting agency. That way you could be working with multiple brands, working on different challenges everyday. On the other hand, if you decide to go the product way, that should be something of your interest or passion. Your experience would then help brand that product and be responsible for its existence. The decision however needs to come from you. Once you have thought of what it is, we could connect and discuss the way forward. Hope this helps. Wish you all the best.

Hi, I’m writing to ask you for advice related to my next career move. To give you a brief outline of my career graph, I am a visual specialist with over 14 years of work experience with leading Indian retailers in fashion, lifestyle and premium international brands. Having worked as a visual merchandiser for several years I wished to take a sabbatical as well as diversify my skills to include designing for retail environments. It was with this view I quit my job in July 2013, did a one year post graduate diploma in design and took some time off after that. Now recharged and rejuvenated, I wish to join a creative or design agency in the role of a retail creative professional. The setback I’m facing is that so far I have not received an encouraging response from such agencies, I’m not sure if this is due to • a lack of specific technical skills such as interior designing, architectural know how, graphic design etc. combined with my mid-senior level of experience, • or if I need to repackage my profile • or sparse networking skills and reach. Please find attached a link to my updated visual resume that has all the required details on my academic and professional history. https://www.behance.net/NamrataSachdev Please do let me know how I could get a foothold in my chosen arenas at my stage of career. Thank you so much for your time. Namrata.

Hi Namrata, You portfolio is impressive. And if we look at the trend predictions for 2016 - this is going to be the year of creative professionals. If you have the vision, you will find the right projects. I am not sure for what kind of profiles are you applying. Generally when one is looking for a job opportunity, they tend to apply to all the possibilities that come their way without actually giving it a fitment thought - working more towards getting a job than towards building a career. Once you are clear with the kind of profile you want to build for yourself, you will start looking for such opportunities. You will make your application, portfolio in the relevant manner. Hope this helps and gives you more clarity. Wish you all the best. Regards, Smriti

Hello Smriti Mam, Currently I am working with Good company on 5 star Hotel projects construction management & co-ordination as a Manager. I have been into industry from last 8 years. I do mostly co-ordination from corporate or head office and less site visit/travel profile. I have done Diploma in civil engineering & B.Tech in Civil engineering from distant learning with software knowledge of relating field also. My office is too much far from old Gurgaon to extreme Noida. Now I am having many health problems due to long travelling daily. I don't want to leave my job because I hate sitting at home, get depressed & need funds also as started new life. I am searching job since 4-5 months but due to bad job market in infrastructure, not getting any jobs in Gurgaon in same industry & with same salary or near. Please advice should I wait more for a new job in Gurgaon or leave my current job coz of distance just because I am planning a baby?? Now I am thinking to change my profile & industry to get a job in Gurgaon. I want to be in HR profile which needs good communication skills & search daily and one can find job in HR easily. I am good at communication & vendor handling & purchase too. I am getting depressed now day by day coz of not getting Job in Gurgaon & delaying my pregnancy decision due to this only. Please help me and suggest Can I shift from Engineering background working experience to HR with good position. If any other profiles in which I can fit & shift to get job at Gurgaon. Thanks. Warm Regards Archana Maurya

Hi Archana, Your profile is impressive. And I can understand travel taking a toll on your health. The kind of skills you have built up over the years, can be used in any industry. So switching from infrastructure shouldnt be a problem. Build a great resume profile, get a great cover letter which highlights your strengths and justifies the industry switching and explore opportunities. Lastly build a career. Dont get into just another job. Wish you all the best. Regards, Smriti

I want to be in profile which is exciting and doesnt involve same work to be performed daily, Can you pls suggest me profiles where I can fit in considering my present working experience. Thanks Parul
02 Feb 2016, 09:09pm
Hi Parul, Your profile looks very interesting. I see from Maths H to HR and interest lies in Fashion and also have experience in setting up business. If you wish to navigate through your current profile, better to pick up something of interest than to be involved in something which is not motivating. If your interest lies in fashion, I suggest exploring possibilities in the fashion industry. And since you have experience in setting up business, a fashion based startup would be good. If you wish to use your maths and analytical skills, you could get into analytics business as well. An e-commerce venture would be a good option. Hope this helps. Wish you all the best. Our model is to curate a collection which includes established and upcoming designers, focus on selling Indian Designs globally. Love to get a feedback from you! Thanks Swati
20 Jan 2016, 05:08pm
Hi Swati, Congratulations on putting up a great platform together. It looks great. The designs, designers - all look wonderful. Conversions will take time. Its best to start on the right note. Conversions will happen. I noticed the communication bit is not stitched together. There is some work that needs to be done in that regards.Currency and country need to match. If you are focusing on global markets, your communication should also be focusing on that. I see it currently targeting Indian markets. I sense confusion in segmentation, targeting and thus approach. Content and communication are the key to success. Focus on that - make it an integral part of your strategy and you shall do just fine. Use bloggers. Collaborate and Co-create - thats the way to proceed further. I hope i am able to add my 2 cents to help you grow. Wish you all the best. Shine on! Smriti

My question I want to start over but I applied for many schools I am not getting selected as I don't have a teacher training certificate and experience certificate too, now what to do. Pls suggest thank u in advance.

Hi Smita, Thats very unfortunate but lets be hopeful and look for options that could be explored. Help me understand this first - 1. Do you have a contract or any other official document from these people? 2. How did they offer you a job without the teacher training certificate in the play school. Now if you are keen on taking up teaching as a job, it would be helpful to get the certification. Adding to your skill sets always help. I suggest getting a certification and then starting over again. That ways, your profile would be stronger and people would not have a reason to reject your candidature. Hope this helps. Hi Jyoti, Your venture looks exciting. I did go through the link you have shared and must state that your work is helping keep memories alive. Growing a business takes time and once it takes off, one needs to put in double the effort to keep it running at the same pace. To grow your business and get new leads, here is what you could look at: 1. Explore Whatsapp marketing. 2. Look at social marketing instead of just adwords. Social marketing will get you referrals along with testimonials 3. Connect with party planners - you could get a few business leads from there. 4. Connect with colleges and younger crowds. Share samples - you could look at getting into year books kind of things These are a few ideas. You could also look at some other ways of spreading the word - through your kids school or in your society. In case you wish to discuss the ideas in detail, do feel free to connect. Hi Uma, Doing something which one is passionate about is the best thing they could do, for themselves, personally as well as professionally. To start something to earn that extra money, i suggest to look at things which you like- it could be taking up an Oriflame leadership, or teaching someone in your free time or just giving way to your writing skills. To begin with, identify what you are passionate about and what you want to do. Accordingly start the activity and slowly make it professional. 21 Dec 2015, 12:54pm
Hi Neha, Thanks for the kind words. Just trying to do my bit to help. Transitioning to other profiles is something common. So you can easily shift from hard core sales and execution profile to a BD role. But before you look at making the shift - you should clearly understand what the new role requires - responsibilities, deliverables, skills. Basis you should make that transitioning choice, learn / acquire new skills if required. Also talk to your manager regarding the shift. Your manager would be in a much better position to help you out. Also talk to people in the BDM role. See what their everyday looks like. How is it different from your daily activities. What are their strengths which help them in their deliverables. That will give you a better idea. Hope this helps. Wish you all the best. Regards, Smriti

Hi Brunda, Its a pleasure to meet you and know about your idea. Giving shape to your idea is one of the toughest challenges of starting up. The best way to begin giving your idea a shape is to 1. write down everything 2. start arranging all that text in a manner that starts making sense 3. There would be many elements of the idea but look at the core of the idea to begin with and then start working on it. I shared a mentor note sometime back. You could find some help with putting your idea on paper with that. Building a website is easy - there are a lot of plugins, sample websites available which let you get started in minutes. To begin with start with your research, prioritize the work and get started. Wish you all the bets. In case you need more help, let me know. I am around. Regards, Smriti

Hi Smriti, I have been pursuing a career in business development & sales for over 13 years now. Unfortunately, over the past few years my employers have failed to understand the importance of business development and I am being pushed towards just sales. I do not de-taste sales, but look at it as an extended arm of business development. My strength lies in good co-ordination , relationship management., persuasiveness, honesty, hard working and never give up attitude. Hi Vishaka, Its nice to hear from you and support the career decision you have made. Creating a brand and growing it is an adventurous journey. And Online media has made this journey even more exciting. You can start with promoting the brand through various online channels, look at the various market places and make good use of the Whatsapp Groups to get the word going. Send across free samples to people who could be influencers and help you spread the word too. If you are in Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru - you should join in for the SHEROES Summit. This time its all about using digital to grow. Hope this helps. Wish you all the best. Regards, Smriti

Hi Smriti, I'm a 20 year old BBA student. I'm really confused what I want to do after my graduation. I want to acquire a work experience of at least 2 years before I go ahead with my MBA. Can you suggest some interesting opportunities after this course ? I'm really keen on learning about marketing, finance and strategy. What would be a good profile to get started ?

Hi Lalima, Firstly, you are not the only one facing this dilemma or stuck in this situation. If you ask your friends, all would be in the same boat. Many are confused as to what to do next. But asking yourself what you want or trying to find what would work for you is a good start. To begin with, see your areas of interest - what excites you more. Based on that explore options, possibilities. Work experience would be a good learning. And then accordingly you could get a specialized degree. Hope this helps. Regards, Smriti

05 Sep 2015, 05:20pm
Hi Priya, Thanks for writing in. The will to start something is sort of a brave decision. And now that you have taken that decision, lets figure out what you could explore. To begin with identify your interests - art & craft, designing, cooking, teaching - it could be anything. Whatever you start up, it should be of your interest. Skills could be acquired for the same if necessary. The big thing is to start. It needn't be fancy, but you should connect with it. Initially there would be no results but keep going. Keep in mind the end goal and that should be your motivation to keep going. Learn from the small failures and celebrate the success. And have fun when you do it. There are a lot of entrepreneurial type opportunities at SHEROES. Explore the ones of interest. Wish you all the best. Regards, Smriti

Hi Nisha, Its good to know that you want to make a start. here are a few things you should do: First - Answer this - do you want to go back to your old job profile or want to explore something different. In either case, it would be nice if you would add to your already existing skill sets - so that you have the requisite skills. Second - Are you ready to go back to work full time? Or would you like to explore work from home options? In both the cases you would have to prepare differently. Dear madam, I'm 31 yrs old. I have 1 yr old son. I did B.E as well as M.E in computer science and engineering. Initially I took my career in teaching. I worked in 2 engineering colleges and had 4 yrs of teaching experience as lecturer. Only after 4 yrs of marriage, I conceived and got a child. Because of that I was not working for past 4 yrs and there was a huge gap in my resume. In 2012, I got admission for PhD in JNTU Hyderabad. I completed 50%. After that I could not continue due to various reasons like guide, couldn't go to Hyderabad frequently and family commitments. (At that time, I was working as a research assistant for my guide in MSRIT, Bangalore without salary. I loved that research work. My area was in software metrics/defects). Recently, I enquired so many people in engineering colleges, I came to know that now it is zero %scope for PhD since so many engineering seats are vacant and some of the departments in engineering colleges were closed already in Bangalore. And Off late, I lost my interest in teaching. Now I want to take up my career in software development/research/testing/apps/tools, etc. But since I have kid, I want to work from home only till my son goes to school. I am ready to learn anything. My queries are the following: 1) will software companies provide any opportunity to work from home for entry levels? For this how should I apply? 2) Being a mother of a small kid, I can't imagine working full time in office till he goes to school full time. Or shall I try jobs in international/ CBSE schools? For that CTET(eligibility test for CBSE teachers) test is necessary for me? 3) To work in a home office set up, what are the apps, tools, languages, I should learn? Or what are the other areas too I can concentrate? I'm not interested in online jobs like data entry, medical transcription, content writing, blogs, sales and marketing. Kindly provide your valuable inputs. Thank you so much. Aishwarya S 9620974000 aisrajan@gmail.com

Hello, I understand your dilemma and here is what I feel you could do: 1. Work from home opportunities for freshers with software companies - thats a bit tough. A company would need to train the fresher before they can be given projects to works upon. 2. Working as a teacher or looking for alternate work from home options would be good. Any certification that helps to make your candidature stronger would always be beneficial. For work from home options, do evaluate the kind of things you like and then explore possibilities. 3. There are various Work from home options available each having its own set of requirements. A secluded area in the house, good internet connectivity, work desk, white board - all help build up that small home office which creates the work environment. At the end, whatever option you choose, should be based on your interests. If you would list down your interest areas and then start looking for relevant opportunities accordingly would be the way to proceed. Hope this helps. Regards, Smriti

Hi Swati, People often navigate through various career paths due to various reasons. You could change fields as and when you want to. Sometimes it is required to acquire new skills for the change and sometimes, the past experience helps. E-commerce refers to online trading / buying - selling. It could be for various products or services. In this industry, you could work in various capacities such as: 1. Supplier - where you make things at home and then use online platforms to sell products 2. Content - you could work as a content person writing relevant information for the goods & services 3. Customer Care - You could get into customer service for e-commerce. 4. Marketing & Promotions - Helping the online stores to promote their products and services 5 Social communications - wherein you handle the community communications for the e-commerce player But before you delve into any of it, try and get a clarity as to what your strengths are and where your interest lie. Also do go through various work from home options available at SHEROES. This shall help you decide. Wish you all the best. Regards, Smriti

01 Jul 2015, 04:06pm
Hi Ranjitha, I understand where you are coming from. Before I make a recommendation for the kind of work you should opt for, you need to identify a few things: 1. What is it that you want to do or what would be of interest? 2. Would you like to get back to work fulltime after a few years? 3. Do you want to remain in the same field or would you like to navigate through career Once you have answers to these questions, you would be able to decide your next steps. Due to your priorities, Work from home or flex work options would suit you more. But the kind of work in these formats is what you need to discover. Hi Smriti, I am working to launch a website that solves an evident problem in a very niche category. I have a technical background. So I find that it is very easy for me to immerse myself in the technical tasks of the website. Hi Neha, Identifying a niche problem and then working on providing a solution for the same shows the business acumen you have. You have rightly identified the other important tasks too which help in the success of a project. While one cannot master all the skills, they can still understand the basics and what benefits / advantages the skill has. What I recommend is doing a small digital workshop that helps you cover all the basics of lead generation, promotion, brand building and community communication along with other crucial things. The workshop shall also help you understand strategy and planning and growth over the years keeping in mind the dynamic environment. Hi Anshu, To grow any business, you need to find more customers and for that you need to reach out to them at the right places. For your home based business, you can start looking at expansion by either online ways or offline methods. In Online media, start by: 1. starting a relevant blog 2. Get onto free social platforms like facebook, twitter, instagram 3. Use Whatsapp to update your existing clients 4. Use online stores like Flipkart / Amazon to sell your products to a bigger set of group In the offline space, start with: 1. Exhibition cum sale 2. Hi Niti, Here is what you need to keep in mind for the app launch: 1. Launch your app in the mid week (Wednesday – Thursday ) so that over the weekend any errors could be taken care of 2. Optimize your images / layouts. Make your icon simple and clear. It should stand out within the design. 3. Add analytics 4. Test the app before the launch. Get user feedback. Include it, implement it. 5. If you can, unveil the app before all its features are live. Actual user feedback would help you improve / modify / edit the remaining features. 6. Hi Smriti, I am Archita and I am working as an Associate in a KPO but want to switch and make my career in e-commerce industry. I completed my M.B.A. in 2011in Corporate Management. However, my profile, salary and domain had always been absolutely different from what i learned in M.B.A. I checked this opportunity on SHEROES itself for Product Manager at PayTM. Now I am struggling to find any way to penetrate e-commerce industry and grab interview call for this profile. Firstly, I don't know what to do with resume. How to put required keywords? Secondly, I don't know what exact skills recruiter will look and pick me for interview? Thirdly, they want experience which I have but in different industry, would they even consider me? Thanks already.
27 Mar 2015, 12:55pm
Hi Archita, I understand where you are coming from. It does get difficult to change career path, but if you really want to do it, you will find a way easily. e-commerce is a business type of a different kind. But if you look at the various processes, they are no different from any other business. When we apply for an opportunity, we look at 1. the role / profile 2. the industry 3. the growth path And how this fits in our overall career picture. Our resume helps us express our interest for the opportunity along with sharing some credentials that help us share how we fit the role. When we try to change career paths, we need to find out 1. Why change career paths 2. How will our past experience help us in this new endeavor. The answer to the above two questions shared convincingly in a cover letter, helps make the application strong and helps one get noticed by a recruiter. Employers are always looking for good talent. Dont forget to ask friends to refer you for a post, highlighting your exposure to the hiring manager. Hope this helps. Wish you the very best. Regards, Smriti

I would therefore plan to start a Venture related to Kids so I can spend more time with my kid and stand on my own. Please guide with your views. Thanks so much in advance. Regards- mansi

Hi Rohini, Your venture looks great. I saw the facebook page and liked the creations. Every platform / medium is different and thus needs to be approached differently. Facebook as a platform is for connecting / sharing. When a business uses this media, their prime objective is to get the word going, support in promotions, marketing support and customer feedback. For sales, its a bit of a tougher platform. Plus with so much fraud happening around (esp through Facebook sales), people are cautious. SHEROES have a business plan initiative in Bangalore http://sheroes.in/women-business-plan-competition Once you submit your idea there, they would help you get a consultant who could help you with the marketing strategies. As for a content writer, I suggest you use their free job posting service and hire someone. Hope this helps. In case you need more help, I am around.

Hi Niveditha, The online world is not very different from the real world. Just that the online world is active 24 hours a day and is boundary less. The roles which you are currently pursuing for the stores, you can be in a similar role for an Online store as well. Just like physical stores, the online stores too need to plan inventory based on sales patterns etc. They also need to keep in mind the kind of merchandise they want, the display, promotion - everything. The operations are similar. The kind of roles you want to get into are your choice. If marketing is your call, explore that. If you wish to remain into planning and merchandise, a lot of opportunities exist. Wish you all the best!

Hello Smriti. I seek your mentorship in navigating my career in digital marketing space. By qualification , i am a post graduate in science and have worked for around 6 years with leading consulting firms on energy and environmental and social sector issues. Due to family commitments had to recently forgo my full time flourishing career in consulting and look for options that offered flexibility and scope of personal expression. Digital Marketing a a field seems promising right now. I am keen to explore the media and its future for me as a career. I am about to complete my 6 month long training in digital marketing with Digital Vidya soon. Can you please suggest me how to navigate further on from here. Any good leads to associate for projects etc. ? Also any additional skills that can come handy.?
11 Nov 2014, 08:32pm
Hi Priyanka, For career transition you have already taken the first step (in right direction). What you need to keep in mind is that you are making a fresh start. It will take time but will happen. This is what I suggest you do: 1. Start applying for relevant roles. Loads of digital marketing jobs are posted here: http://sheroes.in/jobs 2. Look for opportunities where you can use your previous experience in this new field (maybe as a content creator, digital marketeer for such organizations ). Social sector is on a hiring spree and many of them are looking for Digital media managers. Such roles could benefit from your consulting experience and your newly acquired digital marketing skills 3. Talk to your ex - bosses and share with them the new skills you have added on. They could help you find opportunities in your old company. Most people apply to roles when they feel they have a 100% match. Do not look for an exact match. Explore roles where you think you could add value and do justice to. Additionally do look at analytics. Dont ignore that. If you are in Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune or Hyderabad - do join us for the SHEROES events http://sheroes.in/jobs Meet, network, explore and discover opportunities. Hope this helps. Best Wishes.

Hi Smriti, I am a MBA (marketing) with 5 years of experience in sales.I always wanted a career in marketing but ended up with sales. And later due to maternity reasons i had to take a break of 2 years. Now I want to return to work only in a marketing profile. My interest are Health, Fitness and retail industries, but am not getting good opportunities... I am willing to start from scratch...Kindly guide what can I do
14 Oct 2014, 11:22am
Hi Meenal, Sales and marketing go hand in hand. Sales is the final goal of marketing. With your 5 years of sales experience you might have a good exposure to why consumers preferred the product (you were selling), the promotions (for increasing sales). You also would have got market feedback, information regarding the various aspects of the product (pricing, features) along with what more is required by consumers in your product category. Thus it would be easier to switch to marketing profile now. Marketing as a profile is diverse and includes many other things - communication, branding, promotions, pricing, product etc. Which aspect of marketing are you interested in. Once you are clear with that, you can start with applying for those roles. Also have a good cover letter ready. Justify your experience as perfect for the role in hand. I would suggest talking to people already in the desired roles to understand it more and know what it takes. Do join us for the upcoming SHEROES Events where there could be so many opportunities for you. All the best.

Online space offers opportunities of various kinds. Hi Prerana, Its nice to see you working hard towards achieving your goal. There are a lot of ways to reach out to people. Here are a few: 1. Use of pamphlets for advertising. You can insert them in the newspapers. Start with a small locality, see the response and then spread to other localities 2. Share promotional coupons with friends and in the neighborhood 3. Use digital platforms such as facebook and twitter. 4. You could start a Youtube channel too where in you could have your own makeup tutorials 5. Advertorials in magazines are also a good idea. Hi mam, I'm Ananta. I've done my graduation in IT engineering 2 years back post which I attended campus placement but didn't get placed also wasn't keen on getting some software job so post that I started reading finance n did a small course in finance last year post which again I went for interviews but didn't get a job. On asking for reviews fm friends ppl say tht I don't have enough confidence which is true as I do get very nervous before interviews and tht is because I haven't worked before. Also one interviewer had told me that I'm little immature by my answers. I don't know what they meant. It's been 2 years since I'm looking for a job now. Must have given more than 20 interviews. I want to study further but I'm not confident enough if i'll be able to work or get job so wanted some work experience b4 going further. Could u help me out about it?
31 Jul 2014, 12:11pm
Hi Ananta, I understand where you are coming from and you are not alone. Everybody gets nervous. What one should do is practise. Next time you go for an interview, practise your answers, rehearse. This shall help you be better prepared and thus be more confident. Do some mock interviews with your friends. Talk to strangers. get into conversations. the more you challenge yourself, the more confident you get. One thing you could start with is volunteering activities. It shall give you some work experience and help build confidence. The volunteering opportunity could very well convert into a full time job too. You could also connect with the mentors on Tuesday during the Career help hour. Hope this helps. Wish you all the best. Regards,

What kind of handicrafts are you looking at? DO you have a business plan ready? Online medium can be part of your overall business strategy. Hi Kanika, The idea you have sounds interesting. The best way to work on any idea is to write it down. Once we start writing down things - they start getting clearer. Add various components to your idea - 1 who will be your customers 2. How do i reach them 3. what kind of info would they need 4. revenue and costs 5. What is the product that I am really offering 6. Am I making a difference 7. What things do I need? Try answering questions such as these. This shall shape up your idea. Also dont forget to talk to as many people as possible regarding the product. Hi, I am alka having 17 years experience in finance & accounts. A brief about my career history is as follows: I have started my career with aviation sector where I worked in accounts department looking after majorly airlines payables and receivables and also responsible for month end closure activities and working out customer profitability. Working in Emirates has given me exposure to in an international set up where I have been over all responsible for the Delhi Branch reporting into Finance and Admin head – India. I have been responsible for MIS reports, Fund management, resolving auditors and Head office – Dubai queries & reconciliation items with agents & creditors. I was in complete control and supervise the accounts payables to ensure all payments are as per contract and bank mandates are being followed up. Was also responsible for service tax calculations & payments and filing of returns with authorities. In Accenture, I have worked in a Record To Report vertical with British Telecom as our client where I was entrusted with the job of revenue accounting, SG&A accounting, resolving the balance sheet open items and reporting the variance analysis to the management. Currently I am working in an infrastructure company as project coordinator for hydro power projects being developed in India and Nepal. I am responsible for supervising the contractors and vendor payments as per contracts signed & analysing the MIS reports received from site and following up on the progress of the project against the approved schedule. I also prepare the fund requirement in consultation with the Project Manager and Vice President – Finance. I also look into working of the project cost and financial model to find out he expected return from the project. With respect to my core skills, Accounts payable and MIS reports are my key areas. I have worked on all accounting packages like SAP & Oracle barring for the last three years where I have been involved with project financing team where we used to work more on excel and Power Point. I have one issue - I feel very hesitant to approach people - especially who I know. Please advise me accordingly. Currently I am not holding any job since the company I was working for has close down due to financial issues. I am helping my husband in his business. I have already pose my query to Sairee and the reply that I get is as follows: A: Hi Alka, That is a mighty impressive functional expertise in accounts and finance. So sectoral experience is not even relevant, your core experience is. Here are a few options you could consider: 1) Take a franchise for a business which needs these skills - Principal Retirement Advisors for example 2) Set yourself up as a startup consultant 3) Work as a retained professional for a few firms If you are hesitant about approaching people, do try and use platforms like ours. I still would say, please add these details to your profile so that someone can reach out to you. Showcase your strengths and skills. You could also look at the option of supporting remote processes in certain industries. You have a great fit in being an independent professional but that means you will have to work on staying motivated and interacting with people. Starting a business will certainly mean staying on course and managing expectations of people. I would think you can consider the corporate consultant route or work with an agency that helps startups / VC firms etc. If you would like to speak to a mentor about some of these issues, do watch out for the Career Hour every Tuesday. I want to work preferably job but I am finding it difficult to get a job. Will further education help at this time of my career. If I want to start on my own, what should I do? Sairee has given me the options but I am finding it bit confusing as to how I can work on those options.
29 Apr 2014, 10:41am
Hi Alka, I believe that you had a word with Sairee regarding the same. She suggested you few options. The best way to move forward would be to start with the option which you like the best or which gives you the most comfort. Whatever you do depends on what you want to do in life. If you wish to navigate through your career, further education might help. If you wish to start something new, then just go for it. You say you wish to get back into a job. Getting back would be tough. You might even have to lower your expectations. But there are a whole lot opportunities out there. As Sairee has rightly suggested - you should add your experience and your skills to your profile. This helps build credibility and confidence. Do join us for the Career Hour on Tuesday. Talking to mentors would help get more clarity. Regards, Smriti

Dear Sairee, Firstly, fantastic work on this website! Secondly , my queries. I am at present a SAHM and happy to be one. Before motherhood I was a practicing lawyer. Now that my child is 2 years old I feel that I have the time to pursuit something besides motherhood. This 2 year sabbatical from the legal profession has opened my mind and I am not very keen on going back to the confines of the legal profession , although it satisfied me a lot at the time when I was practicing. Now I think it will be very difficult to maintain a work life balance with the pressures of the legal profession. During these two years I briefly tried creative freelance writing but assignments are increasingly hard to come by. Also, since I have a creative streak I have been designing semi precious jewelry , but not having any business experience I do not know how to grow the business beyond sporadic exhibitions, to broaden my client base. My questions: 1. Is there anyway I can pursue a writing career which will use the analytic and writing skills that I have honed during my time practicing and as a law student? I have been applying online for various freelance writing projects but without a body of work it is very difficult. 2. Interior design has always interested me but I do not want to put in to many years of study at this stage. 3. Growing my jewelry business. How can I market my products online? Thanks and look forward to your reply. -- Jahnavi

You can also dial in on Tuesdays during the Career Hour and interact with the mentor. While Sairee helps you with the career decisions, I would be able to help you with marketing products online. Here are a few ways you could start of with: 1. Facebook promotions: sharing products on facebook and taking orders via personal messages or via responses to the posts 2. Making products available on niche online platforms 3. Send e-mailers to friends and family. Share product catalog. Tell them about friends discounts, referral discounts etc. 4. If you wish to sell internationally, Etsy is a good place to set up an online store 5. You might also want to tie up with a few organizations and share your products as giveaways to promote your product Hope this helps.

Hi Sangeeta, While being a freelancer has its advantages, there are also a few challenges associated with it and continuity of work is one of them. Here are a few things which you could do: 1. Ask for recommendations.Connect on linkedin and add recommendations to your profile. 2. Add references to your profile. Also try for referral projects at discounted prices 3. Upgrade your skills. Add them to your profile. 4. Market yourself. Connect with people with whom you have done business in past and apprise them of the new projects you are doing. Connect with new prospects and introduce them to your valued services 5. Talk to a mentor. Seek guidance from someone who does similar work and has achieved success 6. Have a great online profile. Companies are always on the lookout for resources. With an updated profile, chances of work coming your way increases. I would also suggest getting a clarity as to what you wish to focus on - analytics or writing. Then add to the required skills.
